Phase I: Empathize: Empathy is central to the human-centered design process. This is where you will strive to better understand your learners’ and stakeholders’ thoughts and motivations about the problem at hand and within the context of your design challenge. The empathy stage involves you conducting primary research by observing your target learning audience (users), engaging and asking them questions, and watching and listening while they walk and talk you through the tasks that are relevant to your problem. Through this first-hand research, you become better equipped to understand how the problem is currently being handled and what’s important to them.
