Knights Point was a high point, both actually and figuratively, on the roller coaster coastal road between Lake Moeraki and Haast. It offered spectacular views of waves crashing onto rocks in bursts of white foam, the brilliant blues of the Tasman Sea deepening towards a distant horizon and white sandy beaches far below fringed with vegetation clinging to almost vertical rock walls. Seals could be seen basking on these beaches by those with binoculars or telescopic sight. THB and I boasted neither so had to take the word of our fellow sightseers for that.

The parking area at the viewpoint was guarded by a strange creature the size of a man but covered in writhing white feathers. Could this be some ancient Maori spirit that we had to appease before being allowed to progress? No, as it turned out. The creature’s plaintive cry gave the game away. “Get the buggers off me! Get them off!” We realised it was simply a tourist who had decided it would be fun to feed the gulls.

Knight’s Point was named after one of the surveying team that worked on the road linking the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island to Otago further east. It is interesting to muse on what he might have said on first experiencing the wonderful views out to sea. “Wow!” perhaps, or “Look at those waves!”. My money would be on neither of these possibilities. But then I have inside information. I would bet on a rank outsider, “Woof!” Knight was the dog of one of the surveyors.
