Edgar finally came in at four, his face and forearms burned pink and freckled. He carried a small bucket filled with small fish.

“Sarah!” he shouted. “Come see what I caught!”

She ran over to inspect the haul.

“Can we have them for dinner?” she asked.

“Sure!” he said, beaming back at her.

“Not tonight,” I said.

“Why not?” she asked.

“Why not?” he asked.

“Because. I’ve got something special planned.”

Heather came in to pour herself a glass of water.

“Veal,” Heather said.

“Veal?” Edgar asked.

“What’s a veal?” Sarah said.

“I love veal,” my father called from the living room.

“Why veal?” Edgar asked.

“You’ll see,” I said.

“Why can’t we have veal tomorrow?”

“Because.”

“Daddy caught all the fish,” Sarah said.

“It won’t take me long to clean them,” he said. “We can fry them in lemon and butter.”

“Sounds great, Edgar,” Heather told him.

“Please, Mommy?” Sarah asked.

Both of them looked at me, eager and hopeful. I forced my shoulders to shrug.
