Chapter 8

Nathan

That’s not how I expected this morning to go.

Last night, it felt like my goal had shifted to being her travel buddy, gaining her trust over time, and eventually asking her out. I didn’t want to scare her off. I thought she wanted a gentleman. Now I know she does, but only part of the time.

“Nathan, we just had sex,” she laughs.

Her wide smile, and hold on my face makes me feel anything but embarrassed by her rolling laughter.

I keep my hold on her hips and tug her closer.

“You are something else, Josey. How am I going to keep up with you?”

“Buckle up, babe.”

I love this lighthearted side of her, but I want her to know I’ve been harboring deep feelings for her too.

Before I can say anything, we hear someone walking around the campsite. Everyone’s going to get up soon, but I want to hold on to this a little longer. I don’t want to go backwards. Go back to our competitive play all day.

“Can we go somewhere?” I ask.

“What do you have in mind?”

“Keeping you all to myself a while longer.”

She smiles, and we get dressed quickly. In between layers I look across the tent at her and love every inch of the woman I see. She’s fun and funny. Thoughtful and thirsty. I’ll always be on my toes around her.

Once we’re both dressed, I grab a thin towel and some water, and we sneak away.

She’s dressed in brown hiking boots, fitted lavender shorts, a long-sleeved matching shirt that says, my book boyfriend can beat up your real boyfriend, and a daisy printed bucket hat. Hanging over one shoulder is a small camelback with her phone sticking out of the side mesh pocket.

“You got ready quickly.”

“I’m always ready to go. Don’t want to miss anything.”

“That’s my girl. Always prepared.”

We’re walking further into the canyon and she takes my hand from behind.

“Where to captain?”

“I come out here on my days off to hike and explore new trails.”

Usually, after walking around in circles enough times, I find something amazing. I know something special sits at the end of this hike. I hope she packed a bathing suit in that tiny bag of hers. Knowing her, the odds are in our favor.

“Want to be surprised, or do you want details?” I ask.

“Surprised. Always.”

“Then trust me,” I say easily tucking her hand into mine and walking along a small stream dotted with boulders.

“I do.”

We’ve come a long way in the two months I’ve been in town. She caught my eye from the moment they met hers, but I was far from her good side. She welcomed me like an infestation of gnats in her shop. Now look at us.

After last night and finally learning why, I don’t blame her. How could I have given off such a bad first impression to make her think I didn’t like her? It’s definitely in my nature to come off a bit strong, but I din’t mean to turn her away from me. I’m glad we’re finally seeing each other for who we truly are now.
