Chapter 27
I drop the sleeping bag and pillow where I found them, my heart pounding. Iâve got to get out of this attic. Because Iâm not sure Iâm alone in here anymore.
I take brisk steps to the trap door. My hands are trembling so hard, Iâm afraid Iâm going to slip and fall through the door. I have to take a few deep breaths to calm myself down. Nobody is going to attack me in this attic. Not when Ethan is within earshot.
By some miracle, I make it down the stairs to the second level without falling. As soon as my feet touch the floor, I turn to the bedroom door thatâs closed and start pounding on it. After a second, I realize it probably isnât locked, so I try the doorknob and it twists under my hand.
âTricia?â
Ethan is sitting at the desk in the room, his hands positioned over the keyboard of his laptop. He looks shocked to see me standing there.
âThereâs someone in the attic!â I gasp.
Ethan leaps to his feet. âWhat?â
âIâ¦â Iâm starting to hyperventilate. My breaths are coming too quickly. Ethan rounds the desk and puts his arm around me. âThereâs aâ¦â
He squeezes my body close to hisâprotectively. âA man?â
I shake my head. âA sleeping bag.â
âAâ¦â His protective grip on my shoulders loosens slightly. âA sleeping bag?â
âYes! And itâs clean!â
âI⦠I donât get it, Tricia.â
I shrug off his embrace, upset that he doesnât seem concerned anymore. âSomebody is sleeping in the attic!â
He rubs the growing stubble on his chin. At home, he usually shaves every morning. âJust because thereâs a sleeping bag up there, it doesnât mean somebody is sleeping in the attic. People keep sleeping bags in the attic.â
âBut itâs clean!â Iâm desperate to make him understand. âEverything in this house is so dusty, but the sleeping bag has been recently used. Itâs not dusty.â
âMaybe it was under something that was keeping it from getting dusty?â
I glare at him.
âIâm sorry, Tricia,â he sighs. âI just donât think a sleeping bag in the attic is evidence that thereâs some stranger in the house. We havenât seen anyone here. I havenât seen any signs that thereâs another person here.â
âAre you kidding me? There have been a zillion signs that thereâs somebody here! There was a light on upstairs that mysteriously turned off. All that food in the fridge. The footprints on the floor. I heard a crash when I was downstairs. And the painting that movedâ¦â
I stop talking because itâs obvious from the look on Ethanâs face that nothing Iâm saying is convincing him even a little bit.
âFine,â I grunt. âDonât believe me.â
âItâs not that I donât believe youâ¦â
âHmm. Isnât that exactly what this is?â
âI just thinkâ¦â He reaches for me again and I reluctantly allow him to put his arm around my shoulders. âYouâre under a lot of stress right now. I mean, weâre stranded here without phone service. And your body is in the middle of making an entire other person. I donât blame you for feeling tense.
