Chapter 12

NICK HAD BEEN ON THE road less than a half hour when his cell rang. Tapping the Bluetooth earbud, he answered the familiar ringtone. “Holloway.”

Greg’s rough baritone crossed the line. “Hey bud. How was your va-ca?”

“Fine.”

“Just fine?” Greg prompted.

“Good, okay. Nice. Fucking perfect.”

“Hmm. Perfect, you say.”

Nick cursed. Greg had read his foul mood perfectly. Despite working together for ten years, Nick still couldn’t fool his boss. With fifteen years of profiling experience behind him, Greg could read a perfect stranger like a well-worn book. Nick didn’t stand a chance.

“Are you at the airport yet?” Greg asked.

“No, not quite. I got a late start.”

Greg chuckled. “I hope she was worth it.”

Nick sucked in a breath. “What do you want, boss?”

“Not me, the TSA. They’re asking for our help, a bit of inter-agency cooperation.”

“What and why?”

“Unless you’ve been vacationing under a rock, you must have seen the news about the protest scheduled for Monday in L.A.”

“Yeah, I saw something about it.”

“People from both sides of the environmental issue are converging on the city from all over the country, and the air marshals are overwhelmed trying to cover the full or overbooked flights.”

“Where do they need me?”

“That’s the beauty of it, you’re already right where you need to be. There’s a flight leaving Miami tomorrow morning, stopping in Harlingen, making a second stop in Dallas to drop off and pick up another sixty or so passengers, and then continuing on to Los Angeles.”

“Am I getting off in Dallas or finishing the trip?”

“They’ll need you all the way to L.A., but they can get you back to Dallas late Sunday afternoon in plenty of time.”

“Plenty of time for what?”

Greg’s muffled laugh set Nick’s nerves on edge.

“Did I forget to mention, DeeDee’s in town for the weekend? She stopped by looking for you. I think she nearly passed out when I told her you were on vacation.”

Had he not been driving, Nick would have closed his eyes, prayed for strength, and then let loose a string of colorful four-letter words. If Dee was there, that meant he’d forgotten something important.

“What’s the occasion?” Nick asked, almost certain Greg knew more about his family than he did.

“It’s your grandmother’s eightieth birthday, jackass.”

“Oh yeah, right.”

“Your parents are planning a little get together at the Triple H.”

“My parents and my sainted sister never do anything on a little scale.”

“I managed to snag an invite,” Greg told him. “I’m looking forward to one of your dad’s thick ribeye steaks and Miss Rachel’s banana pudding.” Greg paused and then added, “I think DeeDee mentioned the Laramie Brothers are going to be there to entertain the guests.”

Nick gave another shake of his head. Nothing like hiring a five-time Grammy winning country group to perform at your family barbeque.

His voice filled with an appropriate amount of sarcasm, Nick commented, “You do realize, my mother doesn’t actually make the pudding herself. I’m almost positive she’s been banned from the kitchen by the entire household staff.”

Thankfully, Greg let his snarky remark pass.

“I booked you a room at the hotel closest to the airport,” Greg said.
