Gil couldn’t believe how stupid he was for letting this happen. What were the odds of running into the agent? And of all the places it could be—bloody George’s.

But even at low odds, Gil still only had himself to blame.

In hindsight, he should have let Kurt or Sandy take care of hiring the house, but he knew Sandy would fuck it up and sending Kurt would not have changed a thing. He would have recognised him just the same.

“Fuck sake!” he said while he and Kurt drove back to the workshop.

What did he expect to happen? Really? That he would waltz right in and hire out one of George’s houses without anyone raising an eyebrow?

As if.

Kurt started talking, but Gil wasn’t listening.

“What can he really do?” Kurt said. “All you did was hire out a house. As long as he doesn’t know about the cash you had stored there, then we’re sweet.”

Gil was thinking. What if this bloke was to check out the house, make sure everything was shipshape? He had Sandy there now, tidying up, putting things back the way they were. He could probably handle a little housekeeping, but how would he go dealing with an inspecting agent dropping by? Sandy wasn’t exactly the type to think on his feet.

They had almost reached Mordialloc when Gil pressed hard on the brakes.

“Change of plan.” He waited for the traffic to clear but still made his U-turn just as a car came powering towards him, its horn tooting endlessly. The Ranger was a beast of a car, but its diesel engine was not built for off-the-mark speed.

Kurt maintained a tight grip on the roof handle. “What are you doing?”

Gil was looking for Sandy’s number on his phone. Once he found it, he pressed connect.

Sandy picked up after a few rings.

“Hey, what’s up?”

“Are you almost done there?”

“Yeah, you guys sure turned this place ups—”

“You might be getting a visitor from the agent very soon. Don’t do anything…”

Gil stopped himself.

“Sandy, you there?”

Nothing.

“What the fuck just happened?”

Kurt turned to Gil. “I’ve told that moron he needs to get himself a new phone.”

Gil punched the steering wheel, then swung the ute around. He needed to get there before the idiot did something stupid.

Hopefully, it wasn’t too late.
