Two weeks had passed since he’d been shot, and Levi was absolutely done being a patient. With the shoulder brace long gone and his flexibility at nearly one hundred percent, he was ready for the argument Lucy was going to give him about going out.

What he wasn’t expecting was her throwing a karate gi at him and saying, “The doctor said ‘six weeks,’ and it hasn’t even been half that. You’re not going out there on your own until you can show me that you’re healed.”

Levi held up the gi, feeling amused. “What? You’re going to fight me?”

Lucy gave him a stern look he was all too familiar with. “If it comes to that, yes.”

Levi removed his shirt and jeans and began putting on the karate outfit. In his time living here with Lucy, he’d lost any sense of shyness or modesty. There was nothing she hadn’t seen. It was almost like they were married, even though they’d never actually been intimate in any real way. They had a very different kind of closeness now… one that was hard for him to label.

When he was dressed, he followed Lucy to the workout room, where the floor had been laid out with gym mats. These were much softer than the tatami mats he’d trained on in Japan.

It suddenly dawned on him that he and Lucy had never worked out together, and she had no idea what his level of training was. He had to assume hers was extensive, given she had once served as her husband’s bodyguard.

Lucy was barefoot, with loose white pants and a long pink shirt with a Hello Kitty logo on it. Not exactly workout clothes, but they allowed for unrestricted movement. She stood without a ready stance, just like any normal person would be standing on the street, and said, “Prove to me you’re okay to go.”

Levi felt awkward as he stretched, watching her watching him. Her eyes were focused on his feet, which was smart, because the feet often gave away an opponent’s next move.

He tested her reaction time by flipping out a quick jab, aimed at her face.

She dodged with her upper body, not even using her hands. But she did shift her stance slightly.

Levi was also watching her as he tossed a quick snap kick to her midsection, testing her blocking.

With a sweeping motion of her arm, she pressed the kick aside and launched into a volley of attacks. Kick, kick, jab, back fist, all in rapid succession.

All of which Levi blocked—eliciting a smile from her.

Lucy yelled as she dove low, attempting to sweep his legs out from under him.

Levi hopped out of reach, and before she could completely reset, he charged, slamming himself into her and then dodging as she swung an elbow to his shoulder, barely missing her mark.

His heart was thudding loudly, and he felt a rush of adrenaline. He was ready for the fight.

And then he realized Lucy was grimacing and holding her chest where he’d hit her.

She was in pain.
