After my usual swim, I hopped in the shower. The last couple days had been better than I could have imaginedâand certainly a lot more fun than Iâd had in a long time. Not that I didnât usually have fun with Cam and Jack, or with my family, but Emersonâs presence had a different effect on me. Iâd truly enjoyed everyoneâs company as we picked apples, toured a local brewery, chose a place for dinner at random, and walked around town.
Emerson made me happy, and if the time weâd spent together since our talk was anything to go by, I was having an effect on her as well.
Sheâd started calling me Fletcher, instead of Darcy, and I loved hearing her say my name.
But she wasnât ready; that was fine. She was a woman worthy of being pleased, and Iâd just have to keep proving that to her. We only had a few days of our vacation left, so hopefully whatever bond we were forming would keep growing once we got back.
I smiled as I stepped out of the shower, thinking of her delight as sheâd expounded the deliciousness of Jessâs apple cinnamon muffins while sheâd carefully plucked an apple. And sheâd been right, I thought as I grabbed my towel and began to dry off; Iâd liked the muffins so much Iâd asked Jess for the recipe for our housekeeper, Mrs. Reynolds.
As I rubbed the towel over my hair, I thought I heard the door to my room open and close. Frowning, I peered through the crack between the door and the wall, squinting at a movement. Then I blinked just to make sure.
It was Chloe, dressed in a thin silk robe.
What the
I could only blink again as she removed the robe, tossed it on a chair, leaving her wearing a very lacy bra and underwear set. I quickly looked around the bathroom, but the only clothes I had were my swim trunks.
Silently cursing, I wrapped the towel around my waist and looked into the bedroom again, double-checking the bathroom door was locked. Chloe was occupied positioning herself on my bed.
Torn between bafflement, frustration, and panic, I glanced at the door to Jackâs room. It was my only method of escape, and I could borrow his clothes. Perfect.
I carefully opened the adjoining door and stepped into the room to see Jack holding a phone charger out to Emerson. I froze upon seeing them, my feet refusing to move any further; Jackâs eyebrows raised in amusement while Emersonâs eyes widened and began darting around the room.
âUmâ¦â I cleared my throat. âJack, could I borrow some clothes for a little bit?â
âWhatâd, you forget to do laundry?â Jack smirked.
âChloeâs in my room.â
âWhat?â
As it was Emerson who had spoken, I risked a glance back at her. She looked as confused as I felt.
âI heard the door to my room open after I got out of the shower,â I explained, âAnd when I looked through the door crack, she was climbing onto my bed in her underwear.
