CHAPTER SEVEN

‘WHY DIDN’T YOU tell me?’ Penny had the widest smile on her face. It was the next day and it seemed that word had somehow leaked out about her and Dougie.

Alice shifted uncomfortably in the tiny coffee room on the unit. ‘Because I wasn’t sure if it was going to be something or not.’

‘Well, it clearly is.’ Penny hadn’t stopped smiling.

Alice smiled too. ‘Well, yes, maybe.’

Penny leaned against the wall and folded her arms. ‘So, tell me more?’

Alice’s phone sounded in her pocket and she pulled it out and frowned. Reading the message, she felt her stomach lurch.

‘What’s wrong?’ Penny asked immediately, then pointed at the phone. ‘And “King of Wishful Thinking” from Pretty Woman is far too easy to guess! And isn’t it the nineties?’

Alice nodded automatically at her sister’s guess. ‘What can I say—I actually like that song. It’s kind of catchy.’

‘So, are you going to tell me what’s wrong?’ She should have known her sister wouldn’t let it go. Penny was never easily brushed off.

‘Promise me you won’t flip.’

Penny’s face was instantly worried. ‘What do you mean?’

Alice sighed as she poured out two coffees. ‘Okay, so remember when you moved away for a while?’

‘With my disastrous ex-fiancé, yes.’ Her brow furrowed. ‘Why? What happened that you didn’t tell me?’

Alice swallowed uncomfortably. She’d always known the day would come when she’d have to tell her sister what had happened. She never usually kept secrets from her sister and there had just never been a good time to bring this up.

‘So, I met a guy on a dating app.’

‘Not unusual,’ said Penny, clearly wanting Alice to get to the point.

Alice sighed. ‘I dated him for around six weeks—but then broke it off. I just got a bad vibe and decided he wasn’t for me.’

‘So what happened?’ Penny’s voice had an edge to it. Alice knew she was going to be mad.

‘Things got weird. He started turning up places I was. And things happened around the house.’

‘What things?’

Alice pulled a face. ‘My plant died.’

The furrows in Penny’s brow deepened. ‘The one at the front door?’

Alice nodded.

‘But that’s not so unusual.’

Alice sighed again. ‘I know. But I bought a new one, and it died. And so did the third. Then I got a note pushed through the door, and a few messages from the same guy.’

‘Who was he? Do I know him?’

Alice shook her head. ‘I ended up speaking to George about him.’

‘Our George?’ It was clear Penny was surprised. Their friend George was a DC cop. He was steadfast and eminently sensible. But he wouldn’t take crap from anyone.

Alice nodded. ‘When I sat down and went over everything and asked for advice he told me it was stalking. He made me fill out an official report and went and had a chat with the guy. Things went quiet after that.’

‘And you never told me any of this? Why not? How long did this go on for?’

Alice pushed a cup of coffee into her sister’s hand in an effort to stop her waving it around.
