Nelson's Lost Son: Nelson & His Son, #2 by Oliver Greeves
Author:Oliver Greeves
Format: epub
Two weeks had passed. True to her word, Elizabeth sent a note to say she had the small house at Hackett Point, a few miles away to the north. On the agreed day they met at a hotel in Basseterre. Josiah had hired a horse and trap with a driver. They awkwardly shook hands and Elizabeth gave him a peck on his cheek. Then they set off. The horse was old and slow, and they plodded their way through fields of cane, glimpsing the turquoise waters far below. Josiah felt awkward and sensed Elizabethâs nervousness too. When they arrived, they unloaded their bags, tipping the driver and arranging for him to return two days later.
The cottage was very simple yet beautiful, set amid palm trees on the top of a cliff with a view to the north. It belonged to a family who came here for holidays, and they obviously had children because there was a rocking horse and a top lying idle on the veranda. The owners said the servants who lived nearby would cook for them, but there was no other sign of life.
Josiah could wait no longer. As soon as they crossed the threshold he caught hold of Elizabeth and held her in a deep kiss.
To his unspoken question she asked, simply, âDarling, why wait?â
They undressed each other, feeling a warming breeze fan their ardour. Then they fell into each otherâs arms, losing all sense of self and feeling only the other. Elizabeth was a generous lover. He saw she knew the arts of love, and her gentleness and lack of inhibition aroused him, but he was aware too of her needs and made sure that, in spite of his intoxication, they remained together throughout their explorations and lovemaking.
Then in a moment of calm satisfaction, they held each other before falling asleep, their legs and arms still intertwined. Satiated, loved, fulfilled.
After supper they sat out on the porch under a huge swathe of brilliant stars, feeling no need to talk, only to savour the sweet after-effects of love, holding hands and luxuriating in the pleasure of the moment.
âOh, my darling,â Elizabeth said. âI wanted you from the moment I saw you at the Bath Hotel. I am so bored with life, so entirely fed up with the people who rule our lives on this island, pretending that theyâre the elite of the world because they have sugar estates. Then you came.â
Josiah said, âYou have awoken me. Sometimes I felt like a corpse, a piece of rubbish that has been discarded, tossed on the scrap heap. You welcomed me for who I am ⦠and now you have given me something precious. Pray God we have some time to live it.â
It was as if the fates were listening, because the next day as they sat in the same spot, enjoying a dish of tea, Josiah saw the masts and hulls down on the horizon. They were far off, and at first Elizabeth had difficulty seeing them, but Josiah could make them out: French frigates, scouting ahead of the fleet.
