ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
With the exception of the Introduction and chapter 4, the chapters in this volume have appeared in similar form as essays in journals and edited collections over the past decade or so. They have all been reframed and rewritten in order to make clear their relation to one another and to eliminate redundancy, though with few exceptions I have not attempted to revise their arguments or augment their bibliographies. I am grateful to the publishers of the journals and books in which these essays appeared for allowing me to rehearse the ideas in this book first in their pages.
Chapter 1 appeared in The Cambridge History of Christianity: Christianity in Western Europe c. 1100âc. 1500, ed. M. Rubin and W. Simons (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2009). Chapter 2 first appeared under the title âLove between Muslim and Jew in Medieval Spain: A Triangular Affair,â in Jews, Muslims, and Christians in and around the Crown of Aragon: Essays in Honour of Professor Elena Lourie, ed. Harvey J. Hames (Leiden: Brill, 2004). Chapter 3 first appeared as âDeviant Politics and Jewish Love: Alfonso VIII and the Jewess of Toledo,â in Jewish History 21 (2007): 15â41, © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2007, with kind permission from Springer Science+Business Media B.V. Chapter 5 first appeared with the subtitle âJews and Christians in Medieval Spain,â in American Historical Review 107, no. 4 (2002): 1065â93, doi:10.1086/ahr/107.4.1065, ©American Historical Association 2002, by permission of Oxford University Press. Chapter 6 first appeared with the subtitle ââJewsâ and âJudaismâ in Late-Medieval Spanish Poetry and Politics,â in Speculum 81, no. 2 (2006). Chapter 7 first appeared with the subtitle âJews and Christians in Fifteenth-Century Spain,â in Past and Present: A Journal of Historical Studies 174, no. 1 (2002): 3â14, doi:10.1093/past/174.1, © World Copyright: The Past and Present Society, 2002, by permission of Oxford University Press. Chapter 8 appeared in The Origins of Racism in the West, ed. Miriam Eliav-Feldon, Benjamin Isaac, and Joseph Ziegler (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2009). And chapter 9 appeared in Journal of Religion in Europe 1 (2008): 3â33, © 2008 by Koninklijke Brill NV.
My thanks as well to Mohamad Ballan and Natalie Levin for their help in preparing the manuscript and to Randolph Petilos, Teófilo Ruiz, and Mercedes GarcÃa-Arenal for their confidence in the work. This book I dedicate, along with so much else, to my SofÃa.
