As they pulled into her cul-de-sac, Jett saw chaos. A policeman stopped them and the two officers spoke to each other using some sort of numbered code. A flashlight pointed directly into her face and the one outside nodded before speaking into his earpiece. Something big was going on, but she was too tired to care—until her Highway Patrol driver addressed her.

“Young lady, Higgins will take you the rest of the way home. I need to get back to my route.” He lifted two fingers in a wave or salute of some sort. She couldn’t be sure.

Practicing her best Ruby impression, she nodded at him in dismissal, then turned her attention to the new officer, who had moved to stand beside her open window. Didn’t this guy have something more important to do than escort her? She could get home from here. She tried telegraphing her dissatisfaction, pursing her lips, then staring and squinting at him, but he didn’t relent. Instead, he opened her door and gestured for her to exit. Jett was too tired to argue.

He stayed beside her as they approached the confusion. That’s when she realized that the chaotic craziness was centered on her home base. Jett looked around trying to make sense of it all, to see the anomalies and piece it together. But she couldn’t, because it didn’t make sense. Not to her.

She held up a hand and took a step back, knowing she hadn’t been spotted. Everyone was lost in their own intense moment and that gave her a minute to watch. Jett put a finger to her lips and glanced at Higgins so the officer would know she wanted silence. He shrugged and looked on curiously.

Her parents and Ben stood together awkwardly on her front porch. Anger radiated off them. Stiff body language emphasized the tense scene before her; Jett knew that look. Mother was ramping up for one of her infamous lectures. Poor Ben. Poor Daddio. She wanted to hear this before drawing attention to herself so that she would know what she was walking into.

“I’m sorry, but who exactly are you and what do you know of our daughter?”

Her mother’s tone was awful. Was she really speaking to Ben—her Ben—like that?

Jett saw Bens’ eyes go wide as he shifted his gaze to her Dad. Even Daddio had his chest raised and arms crossed in his perfected prosecutor’s pose. Ben wasn’t finding any sympathy there. Both her parents were staring at him like he was the enemy.

“I’ve already explained this,” he said, clearing his throat. “I saw Jett earlier today. She was upset and I saw her take off.”

“Excuse me. Did you say she was upset? What makes you draw this conclusion?” Daddio asked. “You do know our daughter is always composed, right? For a girl of her age, she’s unusually collected. Jett never ‘just takes off.’ What provoked her?”

Mother didn’t wait for his answer. “Did you?” she accused him. “Did you say or do something to cause her to run away?”

Ben looked stunned and a man Jett didn’t recognize stepped in.
