Figure 2-5 String Plucked Close to Fingerboard

A string plucked close to the fingerboard will have a mellow sound. This is because it doesn't have a lot of high frequency overtones.

Think about the song you are playing. Are there places in this song where a mellow sound would work? Think about slower or darker passages. A more mellow sound can accent the feeling you are trying to convey.

Figure 2-6 String Plucked Close to Bridge

When you strike a string closer to the bridge it will sound brighter because you are introducing more of the upper harmonics. Compare Figures 2-5 and 2-6. You will see a world of difference in harmonic content.

Notice that these two traces are the same frequency (about 2 1/2 divisions between peaks on the screen) but Figure 2-6 contains a lot more harmonic content.
