The early games were tough, but Team Canada won against Sweden, Finland, E. H. United, and the United States. The championship match pitted Team Canada against Finland again. In a sold-out stadium, thousands of fans cheered on the two strong rivals facing off in championship action. The crowd almost brought the house down when the final buzzer sounded: Team Canada had outscored the Finns three goals to one, and brought home the gold medal!

Shelly slides in and scores!

Shelly was a key player when Team Canada again claimed the gold at the World Ringette Championship in Stockholm, Sweden in 2004. In all, this young athlete has played at the national level for nine consecutive years, and has claimed four medals and four all-stars along the way. Shelly even has her own ringette trading card, with her professional statistics and team colors.

“I know a girl at the University of New Hampshire—she’s playing hockey there. She’s been a ringette player all her life. She loves the game, and would never pick hockey over ringette. But because the university offered her a hockey scholarship, she accepted. She does enjoy both games. But if you asked her which is her favorite she would always choose ringette. I think more kids would be involved in it, if there was the potential to earn your living as a professional. Now there is the National Ringette League (NRL), in which you play against different provinces; but players do not get paid. There’s not enough publicity—not a lot of other countries know ringette exists. It is very popular in Canada, but it dies at the border.”
