NATCHEZ

(Notch-ay)

Meaning: Red crawfish people The Natchez people are indigenous to the southeastern woodlands of the United States along the Mississippi River valley. The area today is located in the states of Mississippi and Louisiana. The Natchez were mound builders. Today, many Natchez mounds can be found near Natchez, Mississippi. The Natchez tribe was defeated by the French in the early 1700’s, and the survivors scattered. Descendants of the Natchez people live in many different places today, but most of them live among the Chickasaw, Creek and Cherokee tribes of Oklahoma. Natchez tribal headquarters are located at 70 Bluff Road, Olympia Village Columbia, South Carolina.
