Chapter 13

The Tipping Point

Laurena

Iwake up, realizing I’d fallen asleep in the waiting room. Looking at the clock, I realize I have to get to the prison to speak with my father and update him on what’s happened. I get up and head down to Alexander’s room, finding Leo standing at the door. He doesn’t show the slightest bit of tiredness despite the fact that he’s been on duty for more than 24 hours now.

I ask, “Hey, Leo? Is there any chance you can take me to the detention center so I can see my father?”

He shakes his head.

My heart drops. “What do you mean no?”

“I’ve got guard duty, remember?” He nods his head towards the room door, but then he squints at my face as I feel tears welling in my eyes. He sighs. “Alright, fine, just give me 30 minutes to find a replacement.”

“Alright, I’ll be in the waiting room.”

Once I’m back to the waiting room, I call to check on Felix. Tina picks up on the second ring. “Hi Tina, could you get Felix for me?”

It doesn’t take long before I hear him. “Hi, Ren, how’s dad doing?”

“Hi, baby, he’s doing better, but he still hasn’t woken up yet. How about you? How are you?” I ask, worrying as much about him as I am about my father and Alexander.

“I’m fine. I miss you and dad. When are you coming home?”

“I don’t know about your dad, but I’m going to go see my own dad and then I will come home for the night. We can have pancakes.”

“YESS! I love pancakes!” he exclaims in pure childish excitement.

“Alright, I’ll see you soon.” I hang up the phone.

decide to go check on Alexander before I leave. To my surprise, I find Leo inside the room with his back to the door. He’s speaking into a phone and the door is cracked open just enough that I can make out the words. I walk a little closer, wanting to hear what he’s saying without him knowing.

“… yes, I know, I will keep that in mind next time.” There’s a pause as the person on the other end speaks. “He’s recovering which we weren’t expecting at all. He seems unwilling to die.”

My heart is beating so hard, I’m afraid he’ll hear it. I’m trying not to breathe too loudly as I consider that I should probably back away before he can catch me. But then Leo says something that freezes me in place.

“I already said I don’t know he could have missed such an easy shot. Maybe you should have done it yourself?”

Panic envelopes me. This clearly means that Leo is involved in some way, right? Alexander’s most trusted man? Was he the mastermind behind this whole accident? What am I supposed to do? Who can I even trust? I leave before Leo can turn around and find me eavesdropping, returning to the waiting room. I compose a text to Katy, telling her to come pick me up, but my finger hovers over the send button.
