I arrived at Lily's school, a mix of excitement and responsibility coursing through my veins. As I stepped onto the familiar grounds, I scanned the area, searching for Lily's bright smile among the sea of children.

And then, I spotted her. Lily stood near a woman I hadn't seen before, her face etched with confusion and wariness. Something about their interaction seemed off, a hint of tension in the air. My instincts kicked in, urging me to approach and understand the situation.

With steady steps, I closed the distance between us, my heart beating faster with each passing second. As I drew nearer, I could see Lily's eyes widen, a mix of relief and fear flashing across her innocent face.

"Lily?" I called out softly, my voice filled with concern. "Is everything okay?"

Lily's eyes locked with mine, and at that moment, she ran towards me, her tiny arms wrapping tightly around my legs. "Ava! Ava! That lady, she wants to take me away! I don't know her!"

I crouched down, embracing Lily protectively. "It's alright, Lily. You're safe now. I'm here for you," I assured her, my voice filled with reassurance.

The woman watched our interaction with a mix of sadness and regret. Her eyes held a glimmer of recognition as she looked at Lily, but Lily remained oblivious to her true identity.

I stood up, still holding Lily close, and turned my attention to the woman. "Can I help you?" I asked, my voice calm but tinged with curiosity.

The woman took a deep breath, her gaze shifting between Lily and me. "I...I'm Lily's mother," she said hesitantly, her voice barely above a whisper.

The words hung in the air, a revelation that surprised me. Lily's mother had resurfaced, and here she stood, a stranger in her daughter's life.

Lily clung to me even tighter, her confusion evident in her innocent eyes. "Ava, is it true? Is she really my mom?" she asked, her voice trembling.

I glanced down at Lily, my heart breaking for the little girl caught in this emotional whirlwind. "Yes, Lily, she is your mother," I confirmed gently, trying to provide some semblance of understanding amidst the chaos.

Lily's mother took a tentative step forward, tears welling in her eyes. "Lily, my darling, I'm so sorry. I left when you were very young and made a terrible mistake. I've regretted it every day since."

Lily's grip on me tightened, her trust in me unwavering. "Ava, I don't want to go with her. I don't know her," she whispered, her voice filled with fear.

I knelt, looking into Lily's eyes, wanting to reassure her. "Lily, the decision is yours. Your mother wants to be a part of your life, but it's up to you if and when you feel comfortable."

Lily buried her face in my shoulder, her tiny form trembling with uncertainty. I gently stroked her back, offering her the comfort and support she needed.

Turning to Lily's mother, I spoke with empathy and caution. "Lily needs time to process everything. Perhaps we can arrange a meeting later when she feels ready.
