In Kitakyushu, one of the go-to gorging houses for me and my fellow expats was a place called Yakyū-dori, a kushiyaki shop run by a baseball-obsessed man (Yakyū means baseball) who we simply knew as Master. Master loved foreigners – and we found in his premises a haven to be our boisterous selves. He liked to flirt with the girls, and set up the guys with Japanese women. He would send to our table huge amounts of delicious kushiyaki (skewered items) along with all the cheap lager and umeshu we could drink, sometimes taking a break from the grill to join us in a beer or two. There was an effortlessness about him, both in his unpretentious, enthusiastic demeanour and in his cooking, which was always unbelievably delicious.
