True or false?

1. The hymen always breaks during your first sexual encounter.

FALSE: In fact, the hymen doesn’t so much tear as it stretches to allow the penis (or a finger, a sex object such as a vibrator, etc.) to enter. A person with a vagina may well have stretched, damaged or even torn their hymen sometime in their childhood by playing sports, being active or simply by using tampons during their first periods. Even though the skin membrane is elastic, it is fragile!

2. The hymen can bleed.

FALSE: The claim that all young girls bleed the first time they have sex is a myth. And if bleeding occurs, it probably isn’t due to the tearing of the hymen but rather to the lack of lubrication in the vagina, which may suffer small cuts during penetration or by the rubbing of the penis, fingers or a sex object. Also be aware that some people are allergic to latex, and therefore if a latex condom is used during sex, it can cause skin reactions and small lesions.

3. Penetration hurts.

FALSE: Penetration may hurt, but that is often due to stress or, again, lack of lubrication. If you feel pain, your partner may need to be more gentle. Take your time! During the first penetration, you’re not sure what to expect, and you may be afraid and nervous. That is normal. It’s a challenge to relax, let go and live in the moment with openness and curiosity.

Ideally, talk with your partner(s) and express your fears. Laugh about them. That’s right—laugh about them together! And try to make this experience a conscious and shared intimacy. (But note that it’s different if you experience vaginismus.)
