9:00 a.m.

After a short break, Sir Lionel, Roger Benson, and Gordon McFarland left, leaving the team seated around the conference table. Fresh pots of coffee and bottles of water had been brought in during the break. The professionals were relaxed as they waited for their assignments. As Texas native Al Flores might have pointed out, it wasn’t their first rodeo. All of them had participated in similar classified kick-off meetings throughout their careers, but it was a first for Tiera. She didn’t quite know what to expect. Nahbi didn’t waste any time.

“Our job is to find the nuclear weapons as quickly as possible. Each of you will have a specific primary role but we will collaborate and help each other so the functional boundaries are not hard and fast. We’ll adapt as circumstances change and new information becomes available.

“David, I’d like for you to function as the team’s chief of staff. Your experience in Afghanistan included covert operations with Pakistan’s Army in the remote mountain regions along the border between the two countries. The fact that you can also speak and write Urdu and Pashto, two of Pakistan’s most important languages, might help you pick up on something other members of the team might miss.”

Your broad knowledge of Semitic languages should enable you to screen questionable communications efficiently. I want you to bring anything to me that you think is important enough to merit my attention.

“Tiera, you will spend most of your time doing on-line research to acquire specific information I ask you to find for me.

“Pete, you are the most experienced and senior member of the team so I’d like for you to coordinate our efforts with those of the CIA and Mossad. We need to be sure they get any information we have and that they share what they have with us.

“Phil, I’d like for you to act as the team leader for terrorist threat identification. I’d like for you, Al, and Gavriella to review whatever is known about individuals and organizations that might plausibly be involved in the acquisition and potential use of the nuclear weapons. I’d also like to see a short description of each one you identify.”

Nahbi then explained his own role. “My job will be to assimilate everything the rest of you come up with. I will use my ability to correlate large amounts of information very quickly in order to make probability estimates for various scenarios. I have already concluded that it is a virtual certainty that the weapons could only be transported out of Pakistan by ship. The devices are too heavy to be handled as commercial air cargo without raising suspicion. With Afghanistan to the west,
