CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

JUNE 22, 1998, 4:15 pm

1518 SW 2nd Street, Nay Nay’s House

"How you doin', Mama!" Bobby boomed into the receiver, long-legged, loungin’ back in the plush comfort of an armchair nestled in Nay Nay's cozy living room. Clyde was stretched out on the sofa across the room, tangled in a labyrinth of phone cords that crisscrossed the floral carpet. Their Nay Nay, Ophelia Lynn Dominique, sat close by, half-engrossed in "Tombstone" on the television, half-listening with a tender smile to the conversation.

"Hey, my sweet boys," Maya Corrine Wynn's voice filtered through, warm and comfortin’ as a sunbeam despite the miles of wire and cold walls separating Florida State Prison from the warmth of Nay Nay's abode. "I miss you more than words can say."

"We miss you too, Mama," Clyde added, his voice a mix of cheer and longing. "How's life treatin' you this week?"

Maya's laughter, as melodious as springtime, filled their ears. "Busy, my baby boys. I've been sharing a little light in here, guiding some of the women towards their GEDs and beyond. Education's the key, you know."

"Ah, look at ya, Mrs. Wynn," Bobby interjected, a swell of pride liftin’ his words. "Even behind bars, you're lifting spirits and guiding paths."

"That's just how it is, babies," Maya's voice danced with an unwaverin’ spirit. "And let me tell you, seeing the hope spark in their eyes, it's like watching a new daybreak. It's everything."

The brothers exchanged glances, their faces alight with admiration. "Well gon’ head then, Mama," Clyde declared.

Bobby's gaze drifted to the calendar on the wall. "February ain't too far off now. We'll be rolling out the red carpet for you soon."

A squeal of delight crackled through the phone. "I'm counting down the days, my loves."

But as the conversation meandered towards its end, Maya's tone shifted, her mother's intuition cuttin’ through the distance. "Bobby, honey, I need a moment with you alone."

Bobby moved to a secluded corner of the room, a soft thud in his chest. "What's on your mind, Mama?"

There was a brief silence, then Maya spoke, her voice a gentle force. "I can feel it, Bobby. There's a storm brewing in your heart. Share with me."

Bobby hesitated, a flutter of words swirling within. "I’m good. It's all good, Ma. Just the usual worries, nothing more."

Maya sighed, a mother's concern wrapped in her voice. "Alright, my child. But remember, you are of God, little 'Auggie', and greater is He that’s livin’ in you than he that is in the world."

Bobby's breath caught. Those words, a reflection of his father's, whispered in a dream that clung to his memory. A dream tying him to a destiny far greater than any he could yet imagine.

"Thank you, Ma. I won't forget," he murmured, the line cracklin’ with an unsaid promise.

"I have to go now, baby. I love you," Maya's voice hastened, tinged with the sorrow of their impending separation.

"Love you too, Ma. We'll be waiting," Bobby replied, his voice a steady current amidst the emotional whirlpool.

As they were exchanging their last
