Chapter 16

As agreed, four small hisses sounded throughout our circle, and the four nurses in the room dropped to the ground, blue liquid splashes across their chests, shoulders, or faces.

Acting quickly, Pat, Clara, Raven, and Sammy each ran to one of the nurses’ locations. Sammy swore loudly when she got to her nurse’s body.

“There’s a silent alarm here. It’s just a small button and—” she placed a hand beneath a desk, “—I deactivated it, but who knows who that just notified. I’ll try and track it.” Sammy closed her eyes, her hand still beneath the desk.

The rest of us went to work, first closing all of the blinds in the room that allowed others to see in, then wheeling clear plastic-sided cribs across the floor into the center of the room. I tried to keep an eye on Sammy while I worked. I saw her frown, her eyebrows crinkling together. She flicked her ponytail over her shoulder absently. “What…?” She looked up. “I don’t get it. The alarm goes nowhere but into a room with some tech I’ve never seen before but seems to be some kind of charging or docking station, but the room is empty.” She closed her eyes again. “The only other thing it goes to…” Suddenly her eyes opened wide, and she yelled, “Everyone get down!”

We all ducked, just as automated lids slid across the tops of all the cribs, and several small white bulbs on the ceiling exploded, showering us all with white powder.

When nothing else happened, we raised our heads one by one. I made eye contact with Raven, then Sammy, then Pat, Clara, Vasily, and finally the General. No one was hurt. We were all covered in white dust, but no injuries.

I spat, some of the dust having gone into my open mouth.

“What is this?” I asked.

“I—” Clara started to speak, then stopped. “I don’t know.” She sounded horrified.

“Well, neither do the rest of us,” Pat said, clearly trying to placate his wife.

“No, but I should be able to. I can usually look at something and figure out what it is, what’s going on with it. But I can’t right now.” She stared around. “Can any of you use your powers?”

“Uh, we definitely have problem.” Vasily’s voice was an octave higher than we’d become accustomed to. All eyes drew to him, standing up behind a desk, where his frame shrank, hair contracted and disappeared into follicles, and his snout and ears grew smaller and smaller. In a matter of moments, Vasily Novakov stood, naked but for his chest rig, every tattoo from his days with the Russian mob easily visible.

Clara swore while Pat laughed. “And the nudey-dudey rides again!”

Clara whacked him with the back of her hand sharply.

“This isn’t funny, Pat. If we can’t use our powers, we can’t get out. The plan is scrapped unless we can get this dust off. I don’t know what’s in it, but we need to get it off.”

“We can use this!” Raven spoke up from the edge of the room.
