When I woke up in the morning, the sun was shining brilliantly through the rear windows, basking the kids’ legs in white light.

I rubbed the sleep from my eyes, wishing I had one of Pat’s brain-slaps handy.

The temperature in the van wasn’t bad. In fact, with the warming sun coming up, it was starting to get downright uncomfortable. I touched a piece of the metal of the van, and it was just as warm as it had been last night. It was extraordinary. And totally in defiance of the small understanding I had of physics. Maybe there was some obscure physical law or property rationally at work here, but, as far as I was concerned, it was nothing short of a miracle. Or magic. Or witchcraft. Boy, I was tired.

I took a more focused look out the windshield of the van. The level of the snow seemed a foot or two below the hood of the van; it was hard to estimate in the brilliant white, but I estimated maybe two feet of snow. Even if the day was warm, that amount wasn’t going to melt away any time soon. I wondered if this stretch of road was even plowed regularly during the winter. It had felt remote last night as we’d driven out this direction, and it still looked it this morning.

The dark anxiety and swelling in my chest ebbed its way in earlier than usual this morning. If Safeguard was after us, and closely, they must have someone more local who might either have or know someone with a plow that attached to a truck. If they could possibly be moving while we were stuck, we were going to have a problem. Fortunately, I had several potential secret weapons on my side.

As soon as the kids were up, we finished the leftovers of our makeshift meal last night, and I began problem-solving with them.

“So, the snow stuck quite a bit last night, as you can see, but we need to get moving. What are our options, guys? What can you do for me?”

I looked at Elizabeth. “Elizabeth, that’s a lot of water out there. It’s cold, but it’s water, and it’s in our way. Can you ask it to move?”

Elizabeth pursed her lips and put her hands on her narrow little hips. I knew that look; I’d seen my mom—adopted mom, the blackness reminded me— wear that look hundreds of times. That was the look of a woman who was about to have her way, come Hell or high water. We had the high water. The only question was how much Hell she was about to give it.

She walked to the side door of the van and heaved it open. We all shivered as the heat of the van rushed out and the temperature plummeted an easy dozen degrees. Elizabeth picked up a heaping handful of snow and hefted it, as if testing its weight. The snow turned to water in her fingers and dropped to the ground.
