Chapter 22

Syver, Kale, and Jack meet me in the stables as I’m packing my saddle bags. Jack’s still rubbing sleep from his eyes. Kale checks my bags and saddle are in order. Syver looks nervous. I thought his discomfort would give me a sense of satisfaction, but I’m surprised to find I feel bad for him.

‘I’ll be fine,’ I say.

Syver looks like he is debating whether to tell me something. His posture seems stiff.

‘If you have something to say, just say it.’ I place a foot into the stirrup, and hoist myself into the saddle.

‘Your mother went to the Dragon for help when Gorus attacked the castle. She fled with you, a tiny newborn babe, and paid with her life. So, forgive me for not being an advocate of your plan,’ Syver says gruffly.

‘That was completely different. She was weak and couldn’t access her magic. And it was Gorus who killed her, not Malandra. He was the one who saved me. I promise I’ll stay focused, and if I sense danger, I’ll call for Ishkur.’

‘What if he can’t get to you?’ Kale asks.

‘Then I’ll summon the biggest energy ball I’ve ever created and blast my would-be enemies to dust. Jeez, have some faith, would you?’ I pick up the reins and shake my head.

‘I believe in you,’ Jack says with a yawn. ‘I just wish you could take a photo of the Dragon. I’d kill to see him up close!’ Syver and Kale look at him in confusion, not understanding the photograph reference.

‘I’ll paint you a picture when I get back,’ I say, urging Ishkur forward. ‘See you tonight!’ Ishkur starts his run up, spreading his wings wide. In a matter of seconds, we’re hurtling up into the cold, damp air of the dawn sky. I wish for a fog-free day—a thick blanket of Mystican fog would really mess up my plans.

I sense Ishkur’s excitement at flying freely, together. Happy butterflies flutter in my stomach as my heart races. I will never, ever tire of this feeling. The higher we fly, the more Ishkur is able to glide, and we settle into cruise mode. I glance down at the beautiful landscape of Mystica, so green and lush, broken up by the river—a long snake glinting in the morning sun.

Before long, we’re flying over the rocky cliffs and caverns of the Sarkis Tribe, the numbers of which have significantly dropped since we fought Gorus. The tribe was mostly made up of warriors who followed Syver when we reclaimed the castle. Now all who remain are families with young children, and the elderly who preferred to stay in their homeland. Syver sent a small troop out on rotation to ensure they were still safe and thriving, even though new leaders had been elected since his departure.

Thinking of the Sarkis Tribe below makes my thoughts drift to Reve, Kyla, and Brek. It has been a week since they left, and still no word from them. A nervous knot forms in my stomach at the possibility that now they were home with their families, they would choose to stay there.
