Later that day, when the three were walking back from the lunch room after the break, Kabir said, âDad told me last night that sometimes in crimes, the messenger is the culprit.
In many of the murder cases that he has solved, the one who comes in to report the murder is often the one who has committed the crime.â
âSo? Whatâs your point?â Akriti asked. She was not a big fan of such generalizations.
âHe still thinks it is Rehamat Chacha who did something in the lab,â Kabir declared.
âOh come on!â Akriti disagreed. âRehamat Chacha wouldnât hurt a fly. And more importantly he cleared the âlook in the eyeâ test with flying colours.â
âLook in the eye?â
âThat day when I met him and asked him about the lab incident, his eyes were crystal clear. As clear as the water of the Solan stream,â she said, pointing towards the back of the school in the direction of the natural stream. âHad he been guilty, it would have shown.â
âHmm. Yet Dad is quite sure it is him. I told Dad that some teachers were talking about Rehamat Chacha and Sister Leena having a loud argument a few days back and he said that he will speak to both of them when he comes to school next.â
âYou can never become a detective, Kabir,â Aditya said, stepping into the conversation.
âOh yeah? Really? And says who?â
âMe. To be a detective you often need to go with your gut. You need to have a theory or hypothesis. And once you form a hypothesis, you should go after that till you are convinced it is right or wrong. You are just shuffling all over the place. First you said it was Pandey Sir, now it is Rehamat Chacha. Your gut is horribly wrong.â
âWhatever,â Kabir said, and walked away from the two of them angrily.
