I lay limp, trying to sort out my senses. My cheek was resting on some sort of notice board which had once belonged to the broken post. As I climbed giddily to my feet, the board’s lettering came into focus. It read: OLD TIN MINE WORKINGS 100 METRES AHEAD. DANGER UNSAFE GROUND.

I felt all the hairs on my neck rising as I looked towards Angel. I could just make out the ragged shape of some barbed wire which had long ago acted as a fence before being flattened by the wind.

A tower with two large pulley wheels at the top could also be seen. Everything seemed old and crumbling and thick with rust.

‘The saddle!’ Angel was shouting. ‘Alfie, hold onto the saddle!’

‘Keep still!’ My hands were shaking as I cupped them to my mouth. ‘You’re in danger. The ground’s liable to cave in!’

‘What?’

‘I said the ground’s…’ I stopped as I realised the wind was blowing directly in my face. I could burst my lungs and she still wouldn’t hear me.

‘Grogan!’ Angel yelled, stamping her feet and pointing a finger. ‘He’s behind you, Alfie. He’s going to get—’

I turned as I heard the thud of hooves. Rusty Grogan swept past me riding circus style, clinging to the side of the horse. He flashed me a sickly glance as his hand scooped Alaric’s saddle from the ground. He righted himself, laughed, and held the saddle like a trophy in the air.

‘Shiznicky!’ Angel cursed, getting astride her bike.

I signalled frantically for her to stay put.

‘You can’t outsmart Rusty,’ Grogan barked.

‘I swung to him. ‘My sister… ’ I began, but he’d already turned and was heading at a gallop for the stables.

An earth-shuddering rumble dragged my eyes back to the old tin mine. Panic bubbled up in me as the ground seemed to rip in half and a mountain of dust covered Angel. One second she was there with her bike, the next second she was gone. I heard a thin scream as the tower shook and the dust settled. Then only silence.
