CHAPTER 10

I told Ivan that it was probably best if he snuck his way to the car. Detective Gamble had spotted me and I approached him. I couldn’t leave. It would’ve been suspicious considering the extreme circumstances. He gave a command to the officers and we met halfway on the sidewalk near the motel rooms.

“What the hell happened here? What are you doing here?” Detective Gamble asked sternly. I could tell he wasn’t in the mood for any games. I had to tread carefully. If he took me in, it would take time away from my manhunt.

“Look, I’m only trying to find the truth surrounding my wife. That’s all I want. I’m sure that’s what you want too.”

“You’re lucky we’re in the same boat, Damian. I know what you’re feeling. An overwhelming sense of loss, grief and the burning question…why me?”

“That’s what I need to know. You know about Lisandra Pierce? Of course you do. Another victim like Jade. Very similar circumstances. Abducted without a trace. Cold cases with no leads.”

“I know that,” he grumbled.

“No. There is a lead. My wife’s murder. It’s connected to them. It has to be. They weren’t stalked like Scarlett, but how do we know that for sure? We don’t. Maybe whoever did this, is getting bolder and more confident. They abducted a detective’s wife successfully and without punishment. My best friend’s wife was next and then mine. How much longer before another woman is taken?”

Detective Gamble glanced at the bloody scene and sagged his shoulders. He rubbed the dark circles around his eyes. He was tired, beyond exhaustion. He had most likely been chasing the mystery behind the abductions for years. It had taken its toll. Ivan was the same. I took it upon myself to put their burdens on my shoulders. I still had some fresh anger and drive to go deeper.

“I don’t know, Damian. I don’t know. Right now I have to deal with this situation. Stay out of legal trouble. Don’t get yourself killed.”

“Look into him, Detective. He was arrested for a reason.”

He nodded. He understood. He started to walk away.

“Hey, one more thing.”

He turned around, eyebrows raised.

“This is something I noticed. Scarlett, Lisandra and Jade all had dark hair, tan skin and brown eyes. Maybe it’s nothing. Maybe it’s something.”

Gamble’s face scrunched up. He seemed to strongly consider the possibility. He rubbed his chin. He opened his mouth, but an officer called out his name. He quickly turned and attended to him. I entered my car. Ivan was lost in thought while he stared at the scene of Michael’s suicide.

“How did a crazy drug addict manage to take an officer’s gun and…do that to himself?”

“He was a slippery son of a bitch, like Sebastian. A characteristic of drug addicts, I guess.”

“Killer was carved into his chest. Did you see that? That’s some weird shit, man.” Ivan finished drinking a warm water bottle and crushed it against his head. The noise made me feel the back of my own head, where my stitches were.
