Taggish
Mara was clearly conflicted. But didnât everybody have to skip school once in their lives? This was a big jump from a harmless prank, but I knew it was the right jump. Iâd already seen a change in Mara, like a weight being lifted from her shoulders. Instead of nagging at me about making noise or doing things wrong, when she poked her head out her bedroom window, she smiled.
Iâd been giving her spaceâokay, Iâd been avoiding her when in reality, all I wanted was to spend more time with her. Maybe todayâs activities were somewhat self-serving, but I wasnât going to worry about it.
âI wonât try to talk you into this either. You need to decide. If we go back to school now, the worst that will happen is youâll get a tardy slip.â And Iâd be horribly disappointed, but I tried not to let that show.
Mara chewed her lip, a sure sign of the conflict going on in her head. But I wouldnât pressure her. Sheâd had enough of that.
âWhatâs it going to be, Mara?â
I saw the moment sheâd made her choice, and my heart lifted a little.
âLetâs go. I want to go with you.â
My breath hitched a little. I want to go with you. I tried not to read too much into that.
âOkay, then. Letâs go.â I quickly drove back out onto the main road.
âGo where?â
âAh, ah, ah. Iâm not telling.â Not that where we were going was a big deal, but it was good for her to enjoy the surprise rather than worry about it. At least, thatâs what I hoped.
The drive wouldnât take long. I turned my stereo to a top forty station and made small talk.
âSo, those kids who come over . . . â Iâd been wondering about her family.
âMy niece and nephews. My brother, Matt, has three kids, and my sister, Marie, has one. Iâm the youngest.â
âThatâs cool. They come around a lot?â I didnât have any siblings. I had a bunch of cousins, but few of them lived locally. Dad and I traveled to visit my grandparents and aunts and uncles once or twice a year, but that was about it.
âA few times a month. About once a week, sometimes more, sometimes less. What about you? Any brothers or sisters?â
I shook my head. âNope. Just me.â Iâd always wondered what it would be like to have siblings, but Mom got sick the first time not long after I was born, and there werenât any more kids after that.
âLucky,â she muttered. I almost said something, told her she was lucky to have a brother and sister, but she beat me to it. âActually, I donât mean that. I love Matt and Marie. They get on my nerves and make me want to scream most of the time, but I donât know what Iâd do without them.â
âI donât know any different. Iâve always been an only child, but I think youâre lucky to have them.â
Maraâs heel tapped nervously on the floor. Like Iâd done the other night, I reached out and placed my hand on her knee.
