CHAPTER TWELVE

Vaz

As soon as I’m sure the coast is clear, I shift back into my movable form. Stretching out my muscles after so many days stuck in an inanimate form between holidays feels almost as heavenly as an orgasm. My reprieve of two weeks will go quickly, and if I can’t break the curse with Avril, I’ll have no choice but to return to stuff and fluff for another three hundred and fifty-one days. My spirit sinks just thinking about it.

As I’m reacquainting myself with modern day snacks—lime flavored tortilla chips are one of my personal faves—a quick pop in the air disturbs my chomping frenzy.

I can hardly believe my monster eyes. Standing eight feet tall with iridescent wings, bright pink hair, and his trusty bow and love-tipped arrows is Cupid. The source of my torment for the past century. He’s lucky I’m in the kitchen where the ceiling is raised, otherwise, he’d be hunched over.

Before I can even open my mouth to ream him out, he grabs my arms and transports us away.

I stumble my landing and look around at the surroundings warily. We’re back in the Immortal Realm. The lush greens of the grass, fragrant blooms of flowers, and high ridges seen in the distance all point to the Lovely Meadows. This used to be our guardian playground when we weren’t down on earth intertwining human relationships. What is Cupid playing at here?

I don’t have to wait long, his impatience ratting him out.

“Well, well, guardian Vazpin. Finally found the first human in a hundred years who could accept your furry ass. Too bad you had to ditch her once you realized she’s not worth the trouble.” He sneers down at me.

“She’s worth every ounce of trouble you could throw at me,” I spit out, realizing his goading a stroke too late.

“Ah, so it’s true. I have eyes on earth, you know. Following you and all the other worthless guardians I created. You’re all ingrates. You know that? I made you. And did you help me keep my mate? No. You were all too busy helping the humans make googly eyes at each other to be sure I was happy. You were created to serve ME, not those good-for-nothing humans. I’d heard a rumor of your match at long last. Thank you for confirming it.” His smug grin sets my teeth on edge. I played right into his hand.

“You can’t stop me from breaking the curse, Cupid. The Immortals gave me a chance, and you wouldn’t risk facing their wrath, would you?” Hoping to appeal to his sense of self-preservation, I resort to fear tactics.

He bares his teeth, growling, “Those high-handed, head-in-the-clouds, do-gooders shouldn’t stick their noses in my affairs. The guardians are mine to command, mine to punish, mine to do as I see fit. And since every one of you failed at your most precious task, the punishment barely even fit the crime. You’re lucky I didn’t banish you to the Underworld. I’m sure Burning Man himself would have welcomed such fine creatures as yourselves.
