CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Dakota
âI donât understand why youâre doing this,â June says, her tone bitter with a grim cut to it.
âI⦠he asked me, and I said yes.â I falter for words, wishing the tears rising in my eyes would go away, leave me alone, stop making it so tempting to break down. âIs that a problem? Should I have asked first?â
âI justâ¦â June huffs. âIs it a date? What? Whatâs going on?â
âWhy does it matter?â I say, my emotions flaring, as Declan stares bleakly at me.
His face looks ashen, his eyes hard, his lips no longer quirked in their captivating smirk.
Did he lie to me?
âAre you and Declan together?â I press, needing the truth, needing to get my bearings.
âWhat! No.â June sighs grimly. âThis isnât about that.â
âThen what?â I beg.
Beg. I hear my voice, how on edge I sound.
âHeâs my boss,â June snaps. âI canât believe you two are dating, and nobody thought to tell me. Do you know how complicated this is going to make my life?â
âBut, June⦠why? If youâre not together, why does it matter?â
âBecause heâs my boss. I just said that.â
âStop snapping at me,â I fire back. âWe can talk without arguing.â
June pauses. I cringe as I prepare myself for whatever sheâs going to say.
âItâs going to make my life difficult. Surely you can see that. Itâs not going to make my life easier, is it? What if you start dating and then break up? What if heâs a shitty boyfriend and Iâm forced to leave my job?â
âDo you think he would be?â
âNo,â she admits. âBut itâs difficult to say. Iâve never seen him with a woman.â
Despite the friction between us, she couldnât have said anything sweeter. I find myself smiling for a second, savoring her words. Heâs never been with anybody else, at least not long or significant enough for June to have noticed.
âI didnât mean to upset you,â I murmur.
âYou havenât upset me.â
I groan. âSis, come on. Youâre clearly angry with me.â
âWell, yes, yes I am. Because this is the last thing I expected. I was calling to check if you were okay, with all the Gary stuff going on, and then you tell me youâre on a date with my boss. I mean, just listen to how that sounds, sis.â
I close my eyes, unable to withstand Declanâs unflinching gaze when June is so filled with anguish.
I think about what we did in the hotel room, and that was before I even knew June and Declan werenât together.
What the heck am I doing?
But when I open my eyes, I see my man staring back at me. Heâs looking at me like heâd kill for me, die for me, like heâs as obsessed with me as I am with him. Heâs looking at me like nothing could ever break us apart.
Not even my sister?
I might be projecting all of this. Maybe Declan sees this as a casual date, nothing more, and Iâm wishing his feelings into existence.
âDakota?â
âI donât know what to say,â I murmur. âI donât know how to make this better.
