CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Dakota

“I don’t understand why you’re doing this,” June says, her tone bitter with a grim cut to it.

“I… he asked me, and I said yes.” I falter for words, wishing the tears rising in my eyes would go away, leave me alone, stop making it so tempting to break down. “Is that a problem? Should I have asked first?”

“I just…” June huffs. “Is it a date? What? What’s going on?”

“Why does it matter?” I say, my emotions flaring, as Declan stares bleakly at me.

His face looks ashen, his eyes hard, his lips no longer quirked in their captivating smirk.

Did he lie to me?

“Are you and Declan together?” I press, needing the truth, needing to get my bearings.

“What! No.” June sighs grimly. “This isn’t about that.”

“Then what?” I beg.

Beg. I hear my voice, how on edge I sound.

“He’s my boss,” June snaps. “I can’t believe you two are dating, and nobody thought to tell me. Do you know how complicated this is going to make my life?”

“But, June… why? If you’re not together, why does it matter?”

“Because he’s my boss. I just said that.”

“Stop snapping at me,” I fire back. “We can talk without arguing.”

June pauses. I cringe as I prepare myself for whatever she’s going to say.

“It’s going to make my life difficult. Surely you can see that. It’s not going to make my life easier, is it? What if you start dating and then break up? What if he’s a shitty boyfriend and I’m forced to leave my job?”

“Do you think he would be?”

“No,” she admits. “But it’s difficult to say. I’ve never seen him with a woman.”

Despite the friction between us, she couldn’t have said anything sweeter. I find myself smiling for a second, savoring her words. He’s never been with anybody else, at least not long or significant enough for June to have noticed.

“I didn’t mean to upset you,” I murmur.

“You haven’t upset me.”

I groan. “Sis, come on. You’re clearly angry with me.”

“Well, yes, yes I am. Because this is the last thing I expected. I was calling to check if you were okay, with all the Gary stuff going on, and then you tell me you’re on a date with my boss. I mean, just listen to how that sounds, sis.”

I close my eyes, unable to withstand Declan’s unflinching gaze when June is so filled with anguish.

I think about what we did in the hotel room, and that was before I even knew June and Declan weren’t together.

What the heck am I doing?

But when I open my eyes, I see my man staring back at me. He’s looking at me like he’d kill for me, die for me, like he’s as obsessed with me as I am with him. He’s looking at me like nothing could ever break us apart.

Not even my sister?

I might be projecting all of this. Maybe Declan sees this as a casual date, nothing more, and I’m wishing his feelings into existence.

“Dakota?”

“I don’t know what to say,” I murmur. “I don’t know how to make this better.
