The chicken bones are boiled for soup, the bones picked of their marrow, even the gristle chewed by the men.

We miss the taste.

The smell hangs in the cabin for two days, taunting us.

Gradually the taste of meat becomes a memory once again, as Uncle Levi tries to set up some snares without much knowledge of how to make them work, and they remain empty.

Days tick by.

Tick … Tick …

I mark the inside cover of my book, read more about Joan’s crusade, and the children play with their motanky dolls.

From the outside looking in, we could be any normal household in the town of Kwasova, only we are isolated and without the daily freedom to make of our lives what we want. We have to focus on survival. We hunt for anything edible that might have survived winter, even the withered berries that grow on the wild grapevines that weave and tangle themselves into the landscape. They have a bitter aftertaste, but a few are enough to keep you from fainting.

The line between hunger and starvation is that thin.

I am beginning to realize that freedom means you can be who you are meant to be, whatever that is. That freedom is different for different people. That breathing without any thought to it is a gift.

Now, I think about breathing all the time. What is it like to take your last breath? What if the sound of it gave you away?
