Chapter 16

Ethan

Ilean back in my chair to give myself over to my thoughts. It's strange how the sound of nothing can be so loud in the small space of an airplane cabin, but at the same time, it's a peaceful escape from the real world. I feel like I'm suspended for a few hours in the sky in a bubble between what has been and what will be.

In-flight movies, some turbulence, and other people talking make the flight go by quickly. As we fly over Europe, a new day starts as the night slowly turns orange and pink colors, and the sunrises over the horizon.

I can't stop thinking about Lily; her face is still fresh in my mind. I'm surprised she decided to give Mark another chance.

The plane begins to go down. It bounces a little as the wheels hit the pavement.

As soon as we get back to land, I'm sucked into the crowd of people getting off the boat. Everyone is eager to see their friends and family or return to work. I feel lost as I stumble along the clean, smooth airport floor. My heart is racing with worry about Lily and excitement about this new land I will explore.

I take out my phone, hoping to see a message from Lily. I need some comfort in the chaos of unknowns going on around me.

But there isn't any.

Instead, as I read through our last messages, I return to our old conversations, where we laugh and talk about things that only she and I know. Those times seem like they happened long ago, lost in the ether between our two continents.

I called a taxi and gave the driver the address of my hotel. As the cab takes off, Vernazza, Italy, spreads out in front of me like a painting, with each stroke of color and life adding more and more life to the canvas. It comes together in bursts of pastoral green, cute stone houses, and cobblestone streets that wind like old veins through the middle of the city. The town is spread out against a background of rolling hills, tucked between mountain guardians covered in thick, green coats of cypress and olive trees.

The sun is now at its highest point, and its warm golden rays caress the terracotta roofs. Various colors, from fiery reds to soft corals, and groups of ochre and honey-colored buildings sparkle in the sun. Ivy-covered villines creep up the worn-down stone walls, weaving together patches of emerald that go well with the bright red, pink, and purple flowers blooming all over the balconies.

Walking through the tight streets, I feel a rush of nostalgia. Lily and I have talked about Vernazza before. This is Lily's ideal place to go.

The hotel is an old villa that has been restored and updated with modern comforts. When we get there, I can almost hear her happy laughter resonating through the hundreds-of-year-old stonework. In my mind, I see her dancing in the courtyard full of blooming hibiscus. Her bright smile lights up the whole space like it does my life.
