Twenty

They sit together on the school bus, like two pigeons perched on a wire, their arms almost touching.

Tiny Omara. Even the sound of her name seems perfect to Konnie. And whatever Omara lacks in height, she makes up for in courage. She isn’t afraid of anything or anyone.

When Eddie approaches in the schoolyard, Omara turns her hands into claws.

“Take off!” she hollers at him.

And Eddie does.

Brave, tough, funny Omara. She’s a bit of a misfit who doesn’t quite belong with the other girls or boys in the class. But once she and Konnie find each other, they don’t let go. They begin to spend lunchtimes together. Every recess too.

Konnie hasn’t told her mother about Omara. She wants to be sure that the friendship is real. But when she looks at Omara, Konnie feels a joy she hasn’t felt for a long time. It has to be real.

And thank goodness for that.

Because there is no good news from the hospital. Each time Konnie visits her mother, it’s a little bit harder. A little bit scarier.

The heavy feeling is there again on her next visit.

Konnie takes the elevator to the 6th floor.

On the way to her mother’s room, she passes the kitchen. And there’s that man. The man with the bushy eyebrows.

“You’re back!” Willson’s eyes light up. “I wasn’t sure you’d come. Saved you some, just in case.”

Konnie cracks a smile. She takes the ice-cream cup from him and sits down to eat. One part of her wants to run to her mother. The other part wants the ice cream—and the visit with Willson. She likes his company, and she likes the sound of his calm, deep voice. He’s easy to talk to. He tells her about the work he used to do. She tells him about school.

“Why do you come here?” she asks the man.

“My wife is very sick.” He sighs. “She’s not getting better. And you? What are you doing here?”

“My mom is sick too.” And then Konnie adds quickly, “But she’ll be better soon.”
