Chapter Seventeen

Alison sat on her couch and thumbed through messages from Ava the next morning when her roommate crept into the room. The woman’s face was pale and her hair in dire need of taming, but her loose shoulders and smile warmed Alison’s heart.

Hana yawned and tied off her white silk robe before she headed to the couch.

“Please tell me I didn’t sleep for a week,” she groaned as she sat. She smacked her mouth. “I’m thirsty, but at least my headache’s gone and my stomach’s fine. I’m not super-hungry, though.”

Alison shook her head. “I got you into bed and you fell asleep right away, but you slept through the night. I gave you a healing potion in case it might help and used a little healing magic on top of that, but it seemed the best thing for you was simply a lot of rest.”

“Yeah, I feel like a new fox.” Hana lifted her arm and sniffed her armpit. “Ugh, but I smell like a dead one. No, I smell like I’ve slept with those fish they throw at the market. Between this and the tomb raid, it’s my month to stink.”

Alison smiled. “A little shower or a long bath will take care of that.” She sighed. “There’s something I wanted to talk about before you do.”

Hana nodded and her smile faltered. “About how the hell I screwed up so badly you had to charge in to save my admittedly beautiful ass? And, yeah, I did a good job, but we both know if you hadn’t shown up, I would be toast.”

“It’s not about screwing up.” Alison frowned and shook her head. “It’s about your attitude. I understand questioning yourself. I’ve done it my entire life. When I first found out my heritage, I hid it, even at the School of Necessary Magic. I was ashamed that people thought I might be evil and from a race that used a lot of dark magic. Even as I got older, I questioned myself, but I realized that it’s okay to have an occasional question as long as you don’t let it paralyze you.” She shook her head. “What happened, Hana? How did you of all people get conned? You told me yesterday that it was about playing on your insecurities.”

Hana groaned and let her head fall back on the couch. “It’s going to sound so lame when I say it aloud.”

“You’re my friend, my roommate, and my employee.” Alison shrugged. “I’m not my dad. I can’t simply grunt and say, ‘Suck it up. Keep it simple. Eat some ribs.’ I want to know what’s going on with you. I’ll always have your back, and I’ll carve through however many bastards I need to rescue you, but I need to know how you got there so I can help make sure you’re ready next time.”

“I…” Hana shrugged and sighed. “It kind of started with Lily.”

“Lily?” Alison frowned. “What about her? Did she say something? Everything she mentioned to me about you was positive.
