Chapter 19

Elizabeth woke early, walking with her husband as had become their routine, and hurried to dress before joining Darcy and her cousin for breakfast. Lady Catherine had requested a tray the evening before, to be delivered at 10 O’clock sharp, and not a moment before.

Darcy winked at his wife before turning to their cousin. “Tell me Mr. Collins, where did you grow up?”

“Oh— “ He choked, coughing up breadcrumbs into his napkin. “I— I grew up in Kent, near Rosings actually. My father wasn’t much interested in having a child and I spent a considerable amount of time with the rector at Hunsford in order to escape— um, to receive lessons.”

“That was kind of him to take you under his wing.” Darcy replied, only his eye twitching at the obvious implications of his slip. “It was a Reverend Grey, if I remember correctly.”

“Yes, sir! Did you know him at all?” Collins asked excitedly. “He was such a kind man. ‘Full of goodness’ my mother always said. I would often pretend that he was actually my— um, how— how did you meet my cousin?”

“I actually travel through Hertfordshire often, to and from my estate in Derbyshire.” Darcy replied vaguely. “Did Mr. Grey inspire you to take orders?”

“Yes, indeed. My mother’s uncle left her a sum for my education when he passed away and even though my father said it would be a waste— um, Mr. Grey assisted me in gaining entrance to Cambridge and I completed my terms, though I fear my father was correct as I was unable to form any useful acquaintance and returned home after I was ordained. I often question if your Aunt was correct in giving me the living after Reverend Grey passed.”

“Nonsense, Lady Catherine is never wrong, as she will tell you herself!” Elizabeth replied tartly. “I think your father was a miserable, illiterate old man and I am glad you are free of him.”

“I, um— thank you?” He replied, stunned at her defense of himself.

“Will told me you were a good student yesterday, willing to learn and asking many insightful questions. I am sure you shall become a wonderful estate owner one day.”

“I agree. There is much to learn, but you have a desire to better yourself which is most of the work.” Darcy nodded, raising his coffee cup to salute his wife before taking a sip. “And I cannot recommend enough, the assistance of a superior partner in your future life.”

Elizabeth blushed becomingly and applied herself to her plate for a moment. “I have much to do to prepare for this evening; do you gentlemen think you would have time to run a few errands?”

“We are at your service, Milady.” Darcy bowed from his seat, earning a giggle from his wife.

Just then a footman opened the door allowing the butler to enter bearing a tray with that morning’s mail.

“Mr. Nicholls! You are out of bed. Did Mr. Jones give you approval sir?” Elizabeth cajoled, “Your wife will never forgive us if you suffer a relapse on our account.
