CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT

Kate took her time driving home. She needed to clear her mind of the horrible suspicions Sophie tried to raise about Robert before she and Sophie stepped into the house. It was bad enough Sophie thinking it, without putting it in her head. It was not something she wished to consider at all.

She left space for Sophie to park beside her and got out of the car. Sophie looked uneasy, and she wondered if she was remembering the last time she was at Kate’s home. Kate linked her arm. ‘Come on, you. Come and get reacquainted with your godson. He’s grown,’ she warned.

They entered the house quietly and heard shrieks of laughter from upstairs. ‘JJ, you do that again and I’m putting you in the basket!’

Sophie’s eyes lit with amusement. Then a bundle of clothes came flying down the stairs, followed by the sound of running feet and a gleeful shriek. ‘You can’t catch me. I’m the clothes monster.’

A moment later, lugging a basket of laundry down the stairs, Olivia stopped mid-sentence in her giggling reply to Jacob. ‘I can and I—’

Kate smiled at her. ‘He giving you trouble?’ she asked. ‘This is my good friend, Sophie.’

Olivia’s cheeks were flushed. She looked young and carefree and suited Kate’s old blue dress far better than Kate did. She came down the rest of the stairs, animated, her eyes shining.

My last pair of joggers are in this wash.’ Her eyes then turned to the stairs at the boy coming down them. ‘Here he comes. The monster of towels.’

Jacob giggled and flung himself at Kate. Kate lifted him up and smelt his warm soap-scented skin. She turned him to face Sophie. ‘Jacob, this is my friend Sophie. She’s come to say hello.’

Jacob turned his head into Kate’s shoulder. She heard his solemn reply. ‘I’m not Jacob.’

‘Not Jacob!’ Kate pretended to be outraged, and tickled him. ‘Where’s my Jacob then, if you’re not him? What have you done with him?’

Jacob giggled. ‘He’s here, Mummy. I’m him. I’m JJ. Olivia calls me him.’

Olivia softly gasped. She gave Kate an apologetic look, and mouthed ‘sorry’. Kate saw Sophie clock it too. Kate just ignored what Jacob said and tickled him.

Jacob wriggled out of her arms and dashed back up the stairs. Olivia politely excused herself, indicating the laundry in her arms.

Sophie’s eyebrows wiggled again, overdramatising as she mouthed, ‘JJ’.

‘Shut up,’ Kate quietly hissed, even though Sophie hadn’t said it aloud. Then pulled her into the kitchen where she could make them some tea. The trouble with having a good friend, Kate remembered, was they could read you. Sophie had probably picked up on her surprise as Jacob denied his name.

She pulled two mugs out of the cupboard, then a third one, feeling acutely embarrassed for
