Andrew broke our kiss, but I remained, floating off into a heavy, hazy fog of ohmygod and whyareyoustopping, kissing down his neck, tasting his salty skin, and inhaling his piney aftershave.

“So, um…we’re good now. She’s gone.” He cleared his throat and dropped his hands.

“Oh, right.” I stepped back and forced my hands off of him. No way would I wash these hands or my lips for a week.

Then I came to my senses. “Mind explaining what the hell that was?”

“Look, ever since I started up with the Derby Nights crew, women are practically throwing themselves at me. Of all ages.”

I blinked twice. “So? For most men, they wouldn’t see women throwing themselves at them as a problem.”

He cocked his head. “The other day at the grocery store, a mob of teenaged girls practically attacked me, and they aren’t even old enough to be allowed into the show. One of them was a friend of my brother’s. And at Aunt Minnie’s Pie Shop a few weeks ago, the old biddies cornered me, asking twenty questions and showing me pictures of their granddaughters. Their eyes were like undressing me or something, like trying to figure out if I’d make a good sperm donor. It’s unsettling. I just want to make money, not be idolized by every female in town.”

“Hm. The old biddies are matchmaking now?” I chuckled.

“Glad you’re getting a kick out of this. Look, I’m not like most of the guys. I’ve got a busy life. I don’t have time to fool around and be hit on every time I leave the house. And I certainly don’t need the temptation or to give women in town the idea that I’m open for business.”

“Must get pretty lonely in your bed, huh?” I joked and giggled, still blinking back the shock of it all.

I never thought it would be possible, but Andrew pinked at what I said. Was he lonely? He worked so hard for his family, and now hearing all of this, could it be possible the man hadn’t been laid in…years? My panties melted more.

“Laugh all you want. But I don’t need this. Thanks, though, for saving me from that woman.” He stalked off, but I didn’t follow, needing time to still process this turn of events.

I stared at myself in the bathroom mirror. Holy shitballs. Andrew and I kissed again. Before this, I wondered how I’d get him to open up to me and let me in. Now? I wasn’t any further ahead. But he kissed me and God, it was good.

I finished my freak out in the ladies’ room, then walked back to the tall pub table the girls and I had claimed earlier, only now it’d expanded. Tracy, Meadow, Randy, and Andrew all chatted together, and there was just enough space for me next to Andrew to stand at the table. Yes! I practically high-fived myself seeing him there.

But then Luke, the drummer, walked up to the table, too, carrying a few shots in his hands and took up space next to me.
