Hannah had no alternative but to return to Zeke’s house to work on Monday. If she wanted to refuse Jacob’s dictate to leave Oregon, she needed to support herself, and she’d found no other position. Kiss or no kiss, she would have to work for Zeke Pershing.

As she had Friday, she tarried at the McDougall cabin until Zeke should have left his home. She’d have to confront him sometime, but she didn’t have the courage yet.

She and Ruth washed clothes and bedding until midafternoon, Noah helping as best he could with one arm. “I’m afraid I’ll need to leave early this afternoon,” she told the children once the laundry was dry and the bread for dinner rising. “Ruth, can you bake the loaves and fry the meat for supper?”

Ruth frowned, but nodded. “Is something wrong, Miz Hannah? You’ve seemed flustered all day.”

Hannah shook her head, not trusting her voice. Ruth was too perceptive for comfort.

“Zeke’s been surly all weekend,” the girl said. “I think he’s upset about Mr. Abercrombie, but he don’t—doesn’t say anything.”

Hannah smiled at Ruth’s self-correction. The twelve-year-old seemed to have taken Hannah’s frequent admonishments to heart. Unlike the girl’s oldest brother.
