CHAPTER ELEVEN

Dinner was delayed for a bit while my mother washed Sweetie Pie Dough off in the bathroom sink upstairs. She dried him with her hair dryer and finally sat down at the table with him in her lap. His fur was so fluffed up from the bath that you couldn’t see his face anymore—except for when he bared his teeth, which he did every time Jerry opened his mouth to speak.

“Well, Lana, this is a very interesting-looking dish you’ve made tonight,” my mother said, looking at the mackerel on the platter. “What do you call it?”

“Raw fish,” I said.

“Sushi,” corrected Lana.

“Sushi?” said Jerry, his voice filled with dread.

“You love sushi, don’t you, Dad? You told me that once. Remember?”

“Um, really? I don’t know why I would have—uh, did I?” he stammered.

“I’ve never seen sushi served quite like this, Lana. Did your mother give you this recipe?” my mother said.

“No. This is my own personal recipe,” Lana said.

“Are you sure it’s safe?” my mother asked gently.

“Now, Lorraine, I don’t think Lana would serve anything that wasn’t safe to eat, would you, honey?” said Jerry.

“Of course not, Daddy. How could she even think that?” Lana said, giving my mother a hurt look. “And why was she asking if it was Mom’s recipe? Was that supposed to be a diss? ‘Cause Mom is a very good cook.”

“Yes, honey, she was, I mean, is,” said Jerry uncomfortably.

“I didn’t mean to offend anybody,” my mother said quietly. “I’m sure your mother is a fine cook, Lana. I’ve just never seen sushi that looks back at you, is all.”

“It’s fresh, if that’s what you’re worried about, Mom,” I said. “I got it myself at the fish market this morning. Brought it home on my bike, under my arm.”

“I know, Guysie. I washed your jacket this afternoon. Twice.”

“So would you like a piece, Lorraine?” Lana said. “It’s mackerel. Supposed to be one of the fishiest fish around.”

“That’s quite a claim to fame,” my mother said.

She swallowed hard and held her plate out to Lana. Lana took the knife and hacked off a piece of fish that included the head, eyeballs and all.

“There you go,” she said. “You know, Guy and I were talking, and we think that we should make dinner together all the time after you guys get married. We could have sushi twice a week. Right, Guy?”

I nodded.

“How about you, Daddy? Want some?” Lana asked sweetly.

“Actually, I had a late lunch at the hospital, honey,” Jerry said.

“Well, maybe you’d just like some of Guy’s special marshmallow salad then,” Lana said, handing him the bowl of oily marshmallows.

“I’ve never seen you make that salad before, Guy,” my mother said, looking into the bowl.

I shrugged my shoulders and smiled. “Well, now you have. Are you going to have some?” I asked, turning to Jerry.

“I . . . I . . . don’t know quite what to say,” Jerry began. “I mean, I know you kids must have worked very hard on this meal, but I think you forgot somehow, Lana, that I don’t care for marshmallows.
