“This is your home?!” I exclaim as soon as we drive past the iron wreath gate leading to Pearl’s family home.

I’ve always known Pearl comes from a wealthy family. In fact, the Morrigan name is quite famous in the business world. The Morrigan’s are a pretty large family and are known for their involvement and success in the textile industry.

Although Pearl has never really shown interest in the family business, she’s the most likely to inherit the whole thing, especially since her father chose a whole other career path for himself. Pearl, despite not talking about her family often, had briefly mentioned her grandparents’ blatant disapproval when she decided to open up a yoga studio, but she had done it, anyway.

“Not anymore,” Pearl says quietly, her face taking on a somber expression–like this is the last place she wants to be.

It’s pretty clear that if she had a choice, she wouldn’t be here, and judging by the way she insisted I come with her, she doesn’t want to be here all by herself. However, I wonder why anyone would not want to spend every second of every day in this paradise.

The family estate unfolds before us, as Pearl and I arrive for her cousin’s sweet sixteen birthday party. Pearl’s grandparents had insisted that every member of the family be present at the event, much to her dismay.

The grandeur of the mansion is nothing short of breathtaking. Tall, elegant columns adorn the entrance, and the sprawling grounds showcase meticulous landscaping, each element a testament to the affluence that envelops this estate.

“Welcome to the family homestead,” Pearl announces with a faint smile, her arm linked with mine as we step out of her Maserati.

I gaze in awe at the sprawling grounds, my eyes drawn to the pristine lawns and manicured gardens that stretch as far as the eye can see. The mansion itself is a grandiose masterpiece, its architecture blending modern luxury with timeless elegance.

“Wow, Pearl, this place is incredible,” I express, unable to conceal my admiration.

She smirks, clearly accustomed to the marvel her family's estate tends to elicit. “It has its charm, doesn’t it? Wait until you see the inside.”

Before we make our way in, I pull her back. “Are you okay?” I ask, searching her eyes. “We can always come up with an excuse if you don’t want to be here.”

“Trust me, we can’t,” she replies. “I’m just glad I have you here with me. My family can be… pretty intense and blunt, so don’t take anything they say personally. Just stick by my side and you should be fine.”

That doesn’t put my mind at ease, but we keep going anyway.

As we step through the front doors, the opulence continues. A grand staircase ascends to the upper floors, adorned with an ornate chandelier that casts a warm, golden glow throughout the foyer. The walls showcase an array of artwork, each piece a testament to the family’s appreciation for culture and beauty.

The party is in full swing, the sound of laughter and music filling the air.
