When Ian left for work that morning, Biddy had still been sleeping. Leaving her, not knowing if her health was yet in danger or if she was truly on the mend, not having the chance to say so much as a word to her, had been torturous. He’d spent the entire day thinking of her and worrying about her.

He could not entirely clear his mind of the sight of the blood-soaked bandages. Ma hadn’t allowed him the slightest glimpse of her arm beneath that horrifying mass of red cloth. He’d spent every waking moment since then imagining the worst.

What if she’d bled too much to regain her strength? What if she’d forever lost the use of her arm? What if her wounds turned putrid?

The sooner he found out if she was well, the sooner he’d be able to breathe again.

After their shift ended, Patrick must’ve sensed his anxiety, because they’d not taken more than a few steps beyond the factory gates when the blasted lad started laughing. “Off with you, Ian, before you have a stroke. Go see to your sweet lass.”

“She’s not my sweet lass.”

His brother only laughed harder. “Run home. It’ll do you far more good than jumping clear out of your skin with worry.”

“Won’t you miss me terribly if I abandon you?”

Patrick shot him the driest of looks. “’Twill be a misery, to be sure. However, I’ll be walking past the bakery. I believe I’ll find solace there.”

“Fond of bread, are you?”

“Incredibly fond…” Patrick grinned. “Of the baker’s daughter.”

“I thought you were in pursuit of the lass who sells flowers on the corner.”

He shook his head. “We’re only friends.”

“You have a lot of friends.”

“And a lot of brothers.” He slapped a hand on Ian’s shoulder. “But you’re my favorite.”

“Of course I am.”

His brother shoved him in the direction of home. “Away with you. We’ve both a fair bit of wooing to do. Go.”

Ian managed the journey faster than he’d ever thought possible. He all but flew up the front stairs. At the doorway to their flat, he stopped long enough to pull himself together.

He calmly opened the door. Ma sat in her rocking chair, mending. She didn’t look worried or mournful.

“Biddy?” he asked, hoping he’d kept his panic tucked out of sight.

“She spent most of the day resting,” Ma said. “She puts on a brave face, but there’s pain in her eyes.”

“She was awake, then?” That seemed a good sign. He stepped closer to Ciara’s bed. Biddy slept soundly, though her features were not entirely devoid of pain. She was also not without company. A little boy, his ginger hair jutting out in all directions, lay curled up next to her. “What is Finbarr doing up here?”

Ma smiled. “Sweet boy has stars in his eyes for the lass. He sang her a song so she could sleep.”

“Did it work?”

“Yes, but he fell asleep first. He woke up last night while I was tending to the lass and never could fall back to sleep. The dear thing is exhausted.
