CHAPTER 20

They took the ramp off the freeway onto Tropicana and turned again when they reached Las Vegas Boulevard and continued until they saw the Cosmopolitan Hotel and Casino. They followed the signs to the self-parking garage where they parked. They backed the truck into its parking spot so they could pursue Samantha easily or get out of there in a hurry if something went south.

They got out of the truck and began to discuss how they should proceed. While they were talking, Derik noticed two filthy and scruffy-looking guys approaching from the far side of the parking ramp. They walked past the other vehicles and right up to the front of Lee’s truck. The shorter one pulled out a knife and with a rotten, toothy grin, said, “Give me all your money and credit cards, unless you wanna get hurt.”

Derik’s instincts kicked in and he threw his right arm up, getting his body momentum moving. Then he jumped and, half-spinning around, delivered a perfectly executed roundhouse kick, causing the weapon to fly out of the assailant’s hand. The bum was still blinking, trying to grasp what happened when Lee drop-kicked him, knocking him to the ground in a smelly heap.

The second attacker, looking worse than the first, crouched down, waving his knife wildly back and forth through the air as he advanced on the brothers. Derik knelt down beside him, looked him in the eyes and said, “You got the wind knocked out of you. Relax and just keep breathing. It’ll get easier and easier until you’re back to normal. Understand?”

The man nodded his head.

Derik smiled at him and patted his shoulder before standing up. Lee took a couple of steps to get closer to the sprawled, wheezing figure on the floor. As the guy began to breathe a little easier, Lee stood over him and said, “Remember our faces ‘cause you never want to jump us again, or we’ll be forced to hurt you. Got it?”

Again, he nodded, breathing better by the moment. Derik could see the man was going to get up, so he extended his right hand for him. The guy took his hand and Derik helped pull him upright.

“I’m sorry for trying to rob you and him,” the attacker said, gesturing toward Lee. “We didn’t mean to hurt anyone. We’re just trying to survive.”

With his shoulders slumped he walked back in the direction he had come from. Derik and Lee watched as he disappeared down the stairwell. Lee turned to Derik, smirking,
