Chapter 19
Callie had managed to get the whole weekend off to be with Billy while he was over. To be fair, with all the extra visits and on-call she had done since Dr Grantham had complained about her attitude and leaving her colleagues in the lurch, she felt she had well and truly done her penance.
Having spent an hour or two in bed as soon as he arrived on the Friday evening, Callie wrapped herself in a bathrobe and sat at the breakfast bar watching Billy cook beef Stroganoff. He had sent her a shopping list in advance so, for once, she had all the ingredients ready. He poured half a pot of cream into the saucepan, and after a momentâs hesitation, added some more.
âGot to keep my strength up.â He winked at Callie and she felt herself blush as she always did.
âHowâs Belfast?â Callie changed the subject quickly.
âGood, busy, but very good,â Billy replied. âNo murders as yet.â He sounded almost disappointed. âUnlike here.â
âNone here for a while, either,â Callie corrected him. âTouch wood,â she added, hurriedly tapping the table. âBesides which, I heard on the radio that theyâve arrested somebody in Brighton for the murders.â
âReally?â
âYes, there was a press conference. It wasnât Steve Miller talking â I rather think heâs not part of the top team anymore.â
âWhat did they say? Who have they arrested?â
âTheyâre playing everything very close to their chests. Didnât give any details apart from that a Brighton man aged thirty-seven had been arrested. I daresay more will be slowly leaked over the weekend,â Callie said.
âDo you still think theyâre wrong about the Brighton case?â Billy asked.
âYes, Iâm afraid I do,â she replied. âItâs just too easy to think that he suddenly got careless and that itâs all over.â She hadnât heard yet about any marks on the body which rather made her suspect there were none.
âWeâll soon know if youâre right if thereâs another killing while heâs in custody,â Billy said.
âBut there havenât been any for a couple of weeks, it seems to have all gone quiet. Iâm hoping the killerâs been scared off by all this press coverage.â
âI sincerely hope so,â Billy replied. âWe donât want anything to disrupt our weekend.â
âSo, no more talk mentioning the Q word, just in case.â Callie laughed as she touched the wooden table again in the hope it gave her luck and kept the weekend very quiet indeed. âWhat worries me is that heâs tempted to do one now, just to prove that they havenât got the right person in custody.â
There was silence as they thought about that.
âYou could be right,â Billy said sombrely.

On Saturday afternoon, after they had both had lunch with his parents, Billy went off with his brother to see his cousins. He promised that he would only be away an hour or two, but she knew his family. He would arrive home late in the evening, having eaten vast amounts of yet more food, and fall into bed, exhausted. Having said her thank yous, and made her escape, she drove back to Hastings, leaving him to make his own way back.
