CHAPTER 12
Marty knew she shouldnât be visiting a suspect alone, but she felt that given the circumstances, she didnât have much choice. Not if she wanted to break this case open for Jeff and catch Joan Cleverlyâs killer. So she knocked on the door of the apartment sheâd driven to and waited to see if anybody was going to bother answering it. And whether or not theyâd allow her to come inside for a brief chat.
Marty heard footsteps walking towards the door, hard sounds on tile, like a womanâs heels. The front door to Adam Cleverlyâs apartment was opened by his girlfriend, Brandy. She looked surprised to see Marty standing there.
âOh, hi, Brandy. I donât suppose Adam is here, is he?â
âIâm afraid not, umm⦠I forgot your name, but I do remember you from the pool hall yesterday, even if I was a little drunk. You havenât come for a rematch at pool, have you?â
Marty smiled and said, âNo, definitely not.â
âOh no, this sounds serious.â
âJust a few more questions, if you donât mind?â
âI guess not. Youâd better come in,â Brandy said, sweeping her arms in an exaggerated welcoming motion.
âItâs Marty, by the way, and thanks, I promise I wonât take up too much of your time.â
Marty entered the apartment, scanning it as quickly as she could without it being too obvious. Brandy offered her a cup of coffee, which Marty accepted. When Brandy had poured the coffee, they took their cups out to the apartmentâs balcony to drink while they talked.
âWhat can I do you for?â Brandy asked as she sipped her coffee. She took a seat on an outdoor chair and motioned for Marty to do the same. Brandy lifted her long legs and rested them against the balcony wall.
âTo be honest, I was hoping to ask you a few questions without Adam hanging around. I know this must be really horrible for him to deal with. I just want to hear what an outsider thought of Joan Cleverly. It could prove very useful to the police investigation. Iâm going to take a few notes on my phone app while we talk, so I can use them later, okay?â
Brandy seemed to be mulling over what sheâd said, but then she nodded her head and told Marty to ask her whatever she wanted to know. Marty picked up her phone and was ready to start.
âOkay. To begin with, how long have you been with Adam?â
âMore than a year now, hon. We started seeing each other after playing pool against each other in that very same hall you and the cute-looking detective were in yesterday when yâall came to find us. Weâve been together ever since,â Brandy replied.
âAnd did you see much of Joan Cleverly during this time? Or get to know her very well?â
âSure, I saw her whenever she was around at the family home when we went to visit for whatever reason. Why do you ask?â
âIâm just wondering what sort of person she was as a mother. Or how she treated you and anyone else she came in contact with.
