. . . Oh Charles, it was so wonderful to get a letter from you! It took six weeks to get here, but I don’t care. I’m not going to think about what has been going on since then. I’ll just read it hundreds of times and picture you writing it in the sun.

Now, to answer all your questions, darling: yes – we are all very, very well.

I have been learning about growing vegetables from the Ministry itself! You can quiz me about kale as I know everything. And 50 different sorts of tomato. When you come home we should probably buy a farm.

I’ve also become trapped in a web of lies over two chickens that the children bought for Thel’s birthday. Roy got them from the Scary brothers at the White Hart. (Did he ever tell you about them . . .?!!!) He was very apologetic when I took him to task about it! I’ve had to tell Bunty, and now we’ve got to try to keep Gert and Daisy quiet for an absolute age.

Please come home soon as I think I may be falling in with a bad lot.

Oh Charles, do you mind that I write such trivial things? You must wonder if this is what you’re fighting for. Anyway, I’m running out of room so am now writing up the side of the paper. Hope you can read this. I haven’t had a letter from you in a while, but don’t worry AT ALL because I think about you all the time and that gets me through EVERYTHING.

I’m sending you about a million kisses. Will write again tomorrow.
