Georgiana had set off just a minute or two before Antoine in the same direction. Taking an unfamiliar route she was feeling elated and happy with the world. Her thoughts were of the evening before when she’d sat with Antoine and his sister at a card table, and she recollected how many times he seemed to be watching her covertly. At first she’d thought it was accidental, but then their eyes met so many times as they glanced up and back at their cards that in the end, she gave herself permission to believe it was so, and that the pleasure in gazing at one another was mutual. As she cantered along, breaking into a gallop every now and then, the feelings of happiness, combined with the visions of Antoine’s countenance, and his sparkling eyes spurred her on to greater ambitions. Once out in open countryside, she really let Raven fly, galloping along by the river’s edge. She chose to ignore the voice inside which told her she was foolish to gallop at such breakneck speed, and she urged Raven on, faster than ever. How thrilling to see all of Pemberley’s estate before her, feeling such a oneness with nature and the land as she took flight like a bird across the white meadows.

The December ground was hard and unyielding despite the covering of snow and as her head cracked against the compacted ice and hard earth, she lost consciousness for a few moments.

Before her eyes opened, she was aware of a pair of wet lips nuzzling her ear, and the first thing she saw was the large eye of a horse staring into hers. It wasn’t her beloved mare, Raven, but she recognised Arion from Pemberley stables.

Georgiana tried to sit up, but her head ached, and she felt her stomach heave.

‘Miss Darcy, stay where you are, do not attempt to move.’

She recognised his voice immediately, the French accent that made her heart turn somersaults. Georgiana saw a pair of boots, and those endless legs jump down, before leading his horse away to secure it to a tree. Watching him lope back, he rushed to her side, crouching down and immediately removing his riding gloves, tossing them to one side impatiently. Taking a handkerchief from his pocket, he took up a handful of snow and wrapped it inside before applying it to her forehead, pressing gently. As he
