He should wake her.

Will knew he must.

But he couldn’t yet bring himself to do it, not with her head nestled into the crook of his shoulder like the perfect puzzle piece, as if they were made for one another.

He stopped the thought before it could gain momentum and explore places that weren’t possible. She didn’t view him in that way.

Right.

“Violet,” he whispered.

Dark eyelashes resting contently on her cheeks, her lips curled into a sated, delicious smile. It was all he could do not to press his mouth to hers.

“Violet,” he repeated.

This time, her eyes fluttered open, soft and unguarded. She’d never looked at him so. Warmth began to spread through him. Then her brow furrowed, and he sensed a shift in the moment. Now she was thinking. Thinking too much, more like.

Her eyes went wide, and she sat straight upright. “What is the time?” Her legs were already swinging off the bed.

Will reached for the pocket watch on his bedside table. “Half past eight.”

Violet emitted a small cry, hopped to the floor, and began scurrying around, chemise over her head, one stocking already halfway up her leg. At a much slower, and more reasonable, pace, Will snatched up his trousers and jerked them on. He had no right to the annoyance he felt—after all, it was her reputation that would suffer the most should they be discovered—yet it wouldn’t subside. Now that she’d used him for what she’d come for, she couldn’t get away from him fast enough.

She pulled her stays over her head and frantically reached behind her back in a futile attempt to tie them. Will cocked a hip on the bed and watched, and waited. She twisted around, her impatient gaze meeting his over her shoulder. “Can you assist me?”

Wordlessly, Will sauntered over, performed the task, and stepped back.

When she swiveled to face him, Will couldn’t hold back a smile. “Your hair might require some attention.”

On a huff of frustration, she raced to the room’s lone mirror and tucked all the loose tendrils into place. Again, she faced him, looking very much her customary self. Too much so. Already, Will yearned for the Violet of an hour past.

A question occurred to him. “Where do your family think you?”

A sheepishness entered her expression. “At my sister’s house.”

“And where does your sister think you?”

Her gaze shifted. “She thinks me at home.”

Will couldn’t believe she’d failed to devise any sort of plan. “How long do you think that lie will stand?”

Violet flicked her wrist dismissively. “I shall go directly to Lily’s from here and tell her I lost track of the time on a ramble.”

“It’s full dark.”

“It’s the sort of thing I did all the time as a girl.”

“I remember.”

Her eyebrows lifted. “You do?”

He nodded, and the moment grew soft. “It wasn’t unusual for me to espy you from afar on occasion.” He wouldn’t mention that he’d followed her, too, on more than one occasion. Usually, when he saw her out near dusk and needed to see her home, safe.

“Sinclair—”

“Will.”

“Will.” She bit her bottom lip nervously.
