CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Piper
âStay, stay, stay⦠good boy, thatâs it.â
Bones sits at one end of the patio, his eyes fixated on his new favorite toy.
My shoe.
I changed into a pair of sneakers when I went home this morning, and all day Bones has been leaping on them, trying to nibble on the laces. Sometimes I even let him, pretending not to see, because I can tell how much joy it gives him to let loose and just be a dog for once.
And my shoes arenât destroyed. Yet.
I move to the other end of the patio, my hands raised. Bonesâ legs are trembling and saliva pools in his mouth.
I imagine him filled with the same frantic energy that keeps trying to take hold of me. All day, itâs been difficult to focus. My mind has so much to process.
If Iâm not thinking about my dad, about the paltry information my mom gave me, Iâm thinking about the brick. Iâm thinking about the message. But then my thoughts will turn to Pearce, to the way we hugged and kissed before he left for work.
It started out as a goodbye kiss, but then he made that muffled growling sound, the same one from last night, and my body responded automatically. I moaned and our mouths opened, our tongues clashing, our lust rising.
We only stopped when he pushed me against the wall, his hands gripping my hips.
âIf I didnât have workâ¦â
âBut you do,â I said quickly. âAnd your job is important.â
He leaned back, his hands still on me, staring deeply into me with those ice-blue eyes. âIâll see you later.â
He turned and strode away.
âWait,â I said, my heart pounding.
He paused, turning on his heel, his eyebrow raised.
He has such a perceptive way of looking at me, as though he can strip away everything and to the core of me.
But if thatâs the case, heâd be able to tell.
âYeah?â he said.
I was going to reveal it right there, but my nerves deserted me. A different question arose in its place, one I hadnât planned on asking.
âAre we boyfriend and girlfriend now?â
He chuckled. âDo you want to be?â
âIs it such a silly idea?â I snapped, wishing Iâd never brought the topic up.
I only said it so I wouldnât have to say the other thing. But once the question was out there, I realized how badly I ached for its answer.
Iâve never had a boyfriend before.
Getting so close to him and Bones, I needed to know he wasnât going to bring another woman home one day.
I feared him saying, âWhat? I never said we were exclusive.â
But he strode back, wrapped his arms around me pulled me flush to him, and said, âYouâre my girlfriend. Nobody else gets to touch you. Nobody else gets to touch me.â
His body was trembling. I sensed there was something else he wanted to say, but then he just smirked.
Reaching up, I cupped his face. âOkay then. Have a good day, boyfriend.â
He laughed, kissing my forehead. âAnd you, girlfriend.â
After watching him leave, I double-checked all the alarms were set.
