Mr. Darcy traveled back to the Castle Tavern Inn and spoke with the owner. He ordered refreshments and blankets. Mr. Darcy offered the use of his carriage for the Inn to deliver the food, hot beverages and blankets to the men working to find Elizabeth's sister. The owner was much obliged, and platters of sandwiches as well as hot tea were quickly ready to be delivered.
Mr. Darcy was gratified to find that Col. Fitzwilliam had sent soldiers to check the roads traveling out of Brighton. No one was sure how far the caves continued until several of the locals arrived. They had come to help once they knew something was happening in the gardens. The underground cave system went on for miles, they told Col. Fitzwilliam.
"I do not think Miss Lydia would be able to travel that far, though, as she was in a day dress and walking shoes," stated Col. Fitzwilliam to the gathered men. "Mr. Wickham, as a soldier, would be able to walk much farther. If his goal was not to run off with Miss Lydia, but desertion, we may be find her alone somewhere in the cave system."
All search parties that reported in were not sent back out until they had warmed themselves from the hot beverages and blankets. They went back out with those supplies to stay warm as well as for Lydia, if they found her. No one felt like keeping any supplies for Wickham. Sentiment ran high against him for going down in a cave system with an unmarried young woman and getting lost, even though he was a soldier and should have known better.
It had been hours, and they still had not been found yet. Mr. Gardiner had stayed at the pleasure gardens, but it was obvious that it was far past time for him to go back to the inn. Mr. Darcy convinced him to that his wife and niece were probably awake and unable to sleep with worry. It would be much better for the Gardiners if they could sleep and be ready for when Lydia was found.
Mr. Darcy dropped off Mr. Gardiner at the New Ship Inn during one of his runs to the Castle Tavern Inn for more refreshments. He did not go into the inn with Mr. Gardiner because if Elizabeth was awake and waiting downstairs, she would not want him to see her upset. And if she was upstairs sleeping, he had no reason to go into the inn at all.
The local men were invaluable to the search parties, as they knew of some other passages that led to the caves. One man produced a crude map of the cave system along with one other entry point in the town.
Searchers went out in groups of two so that when they found Lydia and if she was alone, she would be kept respectable by having two men with her instead of just one. Therefore, she would not be compromised if she had not already been, by Wickham. Mr.
